Open your Downloads folder. Sort by date, oldest first, and scroll to the top of the list.

Down there, at the bottom of the stack, is a resume with a version number in the filename. A `.dmg` for an app you uninstalled. A boarding pass for a flight that landed years ago. Somebody's wedding invitation as a PDF. A zip file you never extracted, which means you have been carrying around a compressed folder of something for four years without ever once needing to know what was in it.

You did not organize any of this. That is exactly why it is useful.

## The Folder Nobody Chose

For the first decade of the consumer web, downloading a file meant answering a question. A dialog appeared, you picked a directory, and you took responsibility for where the thing went. Most people picked the Desktop, which is why screenshots from that era show desktops with ninety icons on them.

That changed in 2007. Windows Vista shipped a dedicated Downloads folder in the user profile. Mac OS X Leopard shipped one too, along with the bouncing Downloads stack in the Dock. Browsers stopped asking. Firefox and Chrome both settled on saving to `~/Downloads` by default and simply telling you afterward, and the dialog that used to make you choose became a checkbox in settings that approximately nobody has ever turned on.

This was a genuine usability improvement. It also quietly removed the only moment in the process where you had to think about the file at all. When you choose a destination, you are making a small claim about what the file is for. Documents go with documents. Photos go with photos. When the destination is chosen for you, the file is not for anything. It is just in Downloads, which is a category that means nothing, which is why nothing ever leaves.

Chrome retired the download shelf at the bottom of the window in 2022 and replaced it with a small bubble in the toolbar that fades away. The trend is consistent: every redesign of the download experience over twenty years has made the file easier to acquire and easier to forget.

## Strata

Dig through a Downloads folder and the layers are remarkably consistent from person to person.

There is the **installer layer**. On a Mac this is a graveyard of `.dmg` files, because the mount-and-drag ritual has no step that tells you to throw away the disk image afterward, so nobody does. On Windows it is a pile of setup executables for software that has since updated itself six times.

There is the **duplicate layer**, which is where the folder gets honest. `invoice.pdf`, then `invoice(1).pdf`, then `invoice(2).pdf`. You did not download that invoice three times because you needed three copies. You downloaded it three times because you could not find it in the folder after the first time, and re-downloading was faster than searching. The parenthetical counter is the browser politely recording your inability to find your own files.

There is the **bureaucracy layer**: tax documents, insurance statements, a lease, the paperwork for a car you no longer own. These are the files you cannot delete without a small flicker of anxiety, which is the reason they will be there forever.

And there is the **one big file**. Everybody has one. A video, an ISO, a dataset, a game installer, forty gigabytes of something you needed exactly once. It sits at the bottom of a disk usage report and it is the only file in the folder you can actually remember downloading.

## Why You Never Clean It

The folder survives because deleting it is not one decision, it is four hundred decisions.

Every file requires you to answer "will I need this again," and the honest answer for most of them is "probably not, but I cannot be certain, and the cost of being wrong is that I have to find it again, and the cost of being right is that I free up 40 megabytes on a two terabyte drive." That is not a close call. Storage got cheap faster than our instincts adjusted, and the rational move became: do nothing, forever.

So the folder is not a mess in the sense of a failure. It is a mess in the sense of a sediment. It accumulates because there is no force acting to remove it, which is roughly how every interesting deposit on earth got made.

And unlike almost everything else on your machine, it is not curated. Your photo library is edited. Your bookmarks are aspirational, a record of what you intended to care about. Your browser history gets cleared, or it lives on a rolling window, or it is quietly full of things you would rather not have to explain. The Downloads folder is the one place where you kept something for a reason, at a moment, and then never went back to tidy the story.

## The Last Place You Own Anything

Here is what makes the folder worth defending, rather than just cataloguing.

Almost nothing you use is a file anymore. Your music is a subscription. Your documents live in a tab. Your photos sync to somebody else's disk and get "optimized" off your local storage when it fills up. Your games are entitlements that can be revoked. The industry spent twenty years converting objects into access, and access can be taken away by a pricing change, an acquisition, or a Tuesday.

A download is the exception. When you download a file, you have made a small, unglamorous claim: I want this to exist on my machine, under my control, whether or not the website that gave it to me continues to exist. That is not hoarding. That is the last remaining consumer behavior that resembles ownership.

The r/DataHoarder crowd gets treated as eccentric for taking this seriously at scale, but they are only doing deliberately what your Downloads folder has been doing accidentally for years. The difference is filing.

## Field Haul

Cheevos tracks downloads, and the achievements are named the way they are on purpose. Field Haul I lands on your first completed download. Field Haul II at five. Field Haul III at ten, at which point you are, per the description, officially a collector.

Then there is Big Catch, which triggers on any single file over 100 megabytes. It is worth 20 XP, and unlike most achievements it can fire more than once, because a big file is an event and not a milestone. Something that size is a dataset, or software, or high-resolution media. It is a thing that exists in a way that a 12 kilobyte PDF does not.

We reward downloads rather than saves, bookmarks, or reading-list additions because a download is the only one of those that costs you something. Disk space, a decision, a small act of custody. Everything else on the internet is a promise that a thing will be there later.

Your Downloads folder is the part of your computer that stopped believing that.

You saw a page that did something you didn't understand. Maybe the navigation bar changed color when you moused over it, back when that felt like magic. Maybe it was a layout that held together in a way yours never did. So you right-clicked, chose View Source, and a new window opened full of monospaced text.

Most of it made no sense. But some of it did. You found the piece that looked like the thing you wanted, you copied it, you pasted it into your own file, and you changed the color from blue to green to see if you understood what you were looking at. You did.

That was the whole curriculum. Nobody designed it.

## The Web Was Never Compiled

The reason View Source existed is that the web's creators never seriously considered hiding anything.

When Tim Berners-Lee wrote the first browser at CERN in 1990, the program was called WorldWideWeb, and it was both a browser and an editor. You could read a page and then edit it in the same application. The distinction between consuming a document and authoring one was not meant to be a wall. It was barely meant to be a line.

HTML shipped as plain text because that was the simplest thing that could work. There was no compilation step, no bytecode, no binary format. The instructions the browser followed were the same characters the author typed. That is a strange property for a computing platform to have. Almost nothing else works this way. You cannot right-click a native application and read how it was made.

Netscape Navigator put View Source in the menu bar in 1994, and every browser since has kept it. Ctrl+U in Firefox and Chrome. The `view-source:` scheme still works if you type it in front of a URL. It survived thirty years of platform churn largely because nobody ever found a reason to take it out.

The thing to understand is that this was not generosity. It was a side effect. And for about fifteen years, that side effect was the most effective programming education program in the world, with an enrollment in the millions and a budget of zero.

## The Accidental Curriculum

GeoCities launched in 1994 and gave anybody a free page. The pages were mostly terrible: tiled backgrounds, animated construction signs, text that blinked because Netscape had shipped a `<blink>` tag and people used it the way you would expect. But every one of those pages was readable. If you liked somebody's guestbook, you could go find out how they did it.

MySpace turned this into a mass event. The profile fields accepted raw HTML, and it turned out that if you pasted CSS into the "About Me" box, it restyled the entire page. This was not a feature. It was a gap in the sanitizer that MySpace mostly gave up on closing. What followed was a generation of teenagers learning CSS specificity rules because they wanted their profile background to be a photo of a band, and the only way to find out how somebody else had done it was to look at their source.

The people who learned this way did not learn cleanly. They learned `<table>` layouts and `spacer.gif` and `<font>` tags, most of which the industry spent the following decade trying to unlearn. But they learned that a webpage was a thing a person made, out of parts, and that the parts could be inspected. That is the load-bearing idea. Everything else is syntax.

There was a small industry, around 2002, of JavaScript snippets that disabled right-click in order to "protect" a page's source. They were a running joke. They stopped the context menu and did nothing else. Ctrl+U still worked. The View menu still worked. `view-source:` still worked. The web was open in a way that individual authors could not opt out of even when they very much wanted to.

## Then We Started Shipping Bundles

Right-click on a modern web application. What you get, in a lot of cases, is this:

Followed by a script tag pointing at `main.4f9c2b81.js`, which is 800 kilobytes of minified JavaScript on one line, with variable names shortened to `t`, `e`, and `n` to save bytes over the wire. The layout you were curious about is not in there in any form you can read. It is assembled at runtime from components that were compiled, tree-shaken, and hashed.

Nothing about this is malicious. Minification exists because bytes cost money and time. Bundling exists because HTTP/1.1 punished you for requesting a hundred small files. Component frameworks exist because building a large application out of raw HTML strings is genuinely miserable. Every individual decision here is defensible, and if you have shipped a production frontend, you have made all of them yourself.

But the aggregate effect is that the page stopped being a document you could read and became an artifact you could only run. The source is technically still there. It is just not source anymore in the sense that matters, which is: could a curious fourteen year old with no context learn anything from looking at it.

## The Honest Counterargument

Here is the part where the nostalgia deserves some resistance.

The View Source era was also the era in which the best available way to build a two-column layout was a table with an invisible one-pixel image in it. Reading that source taught you real things, and it also taught you a great deal that was actively wrong. The web got better at building things, and the cost of getting better was some readability. That is a trade almost every maturing platform makes.

Browsers also gave something back. DevTools ship in every browser now, free, and the Elements panel shows you the live DOM rather than the raw markup, which is arguably a better teaching artifact: you can watch a class get added on hover and see the style recompute in real time. Firefox integrated most of what Firebug pioneered directly into the browser. Source maps mean that plenty of production sites can be read in their original form, if you know to look for them, and quite a lot of the web's actual infrastructure is on GitHub, which is a more complete education than any single page's markup ever was.

So the honest version is not "the open web died." It is that the door moved. It used to be the first item in the right-click menu, which meant you found it by accident. Now it is behind a panel with eleven tabs, most of which are about performance profiling, and you have to already know that you want to be a developer before you go looking. The web did not close. It stopped recruiting.

## Primary Source

There is an achievement in Cheevos called Primary Source. You get it for using `view-source:` on a page. It is worth 15 XP, which is more than most single actions, and it sits in the Firefox category next to the other things that reward poking at the machinery instead of just using it.

We put it in because the habit is worth having even now, when what you find is often unreadable. Sometimes it is not. Plenty of the web is still hand-written HTML by a person who was not thinking about you, and reading it is the closest thing we have to overhearing how somebody actually works.

The interesting thing about a webpage was never that it rendered. It was that somebody made it, and left the instructions lying around.

The ritual goes like this. You're at work, or on your phone, or in the middle of something, and you find an article that looks interesting. Not interesting enough to read right now. But interesting. You save it to Pocket, or add it to your reading list, or open it in a new tab you plan to return to, or bookmark it with a vague intention of coming back.

You don't come back. Or you come back months later, by which point the article feels stale or the context has changed or you've forgotten why you saved it. Or the tab has been open for so long that you feel guilty about the time you've spent not reading it, and you close it without reading it just to make the guilt stop.

The save-for-later behavior is universal. The reading-later behavior is nearly absent.

## How the Genre Started

Instapaper launched in 2008, built by Marco Arment, then an engineer at Tumblr. The problem it was solving was real: articles on the web were often formatted badly for reading. Small text, cluttered layouts, advertisements everywhere. Instapaper stripped all of that out and gave you the words in a clean, readable format, saved for offline access when you wanted to read without interruption.

The pitch was: save the good stuff from the messy web, read it cleanly when you're ready. This was a genuine improvement over the experience it replaced, and Instapaper found a devoted audience immediately.

Nate Weiner built Read It Later in 2007, before Instapaper, as a Firefox extension. In 2012 he raised funding, rewrote it as a standalone service, and renamed it Pocket. Mozilla acquired Pocket in 2017 and integrated it into Firefox. For a while there was a Pocket save button in the toolbar of every Firefox installation, surfacing recommended articles to users who had never asked for them.

Safari added Reading List in 2011. Chrome added a "reading list" feature much later, in 2021. Every browser eventually built a native version of the same concept: a place to put things you want to read later.

The category was validated. The problem it addressed was real. Tens of millions of people used these services.

And still, almost nobody read what they saved.

## The Psychology of Saving

There's a phenomenon in behavioral psychology called the Zeigarnik effect. Bluma Zeigarnik, a Soviet psychologist, observed in the 1920s that people remember uncompleted tasks better than completed ones. The incomplete task creates a kind of cognitive tension that keeps it active in working memory.

Read-later apps might produce the opposite: a completion effect that isn't real. You found an interesting article, you performed an action in response, you put it somewhere safe. The action releases the tension of the open loop. The cognitive pressure to read the thing dissipates because you've "handled it." The fact that you haven't actually read it is a detail your brain seems willing to overlook.

This isn't laziness. It's a feature of how human attention and memory work. The act of saving feels like progress because it is a form of progress, just not the kind that produces the outcome you wanted.

The problem compounds over time. A Pocket library with three hundred articles isn't just a reading list. It's a record of three hundred moments when you thought something looked interesting and didn't follow through. Most people who've had a Pocket account for more than a year describe their library with something between affection and mild dread. The things you saved are a kind of mirror.

## Why Apps Couldn't Solve It

The read-later apps tried various interventions to close the gap between saving and reading.

Pocket added "recommended" content surfaced from other users' libraries. This increased engagement with the app, but mainly by giving people new things to save without necessarily leading to more reading of existing saves.

Instapaper added highlighting, notes, and export features. These are genuinely useful for the minority of users who read deeply and want to keep notes. They didn't change the fundamental save-don't-read ratio.

Every app experimented with daily digests: a notification saying "you have N articles waiting, here's one." Some users find this useful. Most find it another source of guilt.

The apps kept improving. The reading rates didn't change much.

The problem isn't access. Before Pocket, you might have had fifty tabs open with things you meant to read. After Pocket, you have fifty items in Pocket you mean to read. The container changed. The behavior didn't.

The behavior didn't change because the underlying constraint is time and attention, and no app can give you more of either. You're busy. The article will still be there. Later becomes never with a frequency that should, by now, not surprise anyone.

## The Honest Case

Here's the thing that read-later apps get slightly wrong in their framing: saving is not failure.

Your Pocket library is a record of things that interested you. Even if you never read most of them, the act of noticing them, of pausing long enough to think "this seems worth reading," is a kind of attention. You were paying attention to what caught your eye.

There's also a small but real group of people who actually do use these tools as intended. People with commutes where reading is possible, people who've built a deliberate reading practice, people who use Pocket with e-reader integration to read on actual reading devices where the context is right. For these users, the apps work well. The concept is sound. The execution is good. The issue is that the majority of users don't have the habits or circumstances that make the habit stick.

Del.icio.us, which solved a different but adjacent problem (sharing and organizing links publicly), had a similar divide between how people used it and how its creators imagined people would use it. Most people who saved to del.icio.us weren't curating a personal library. They were impulsively saving things they might want and often never returned to. The service was useful anyway, just differently.

## What We Reward Instead

Cheevos tracks actual reading behavior. Time spent on pages. Pages visited. Articles read to completion. We don't have a "saved for later" event that earns points.

This is deliberate. The thing worth celebrating is what you did, not what you intended to do. The Bookworm achievements reflect genuine engagement: reading broadly, reading deeply, returning to topics you care about. Not a list of aspirations sitting in an app.

Your read-later list is optimistic and probably wrong about what future-you will have time for. Your browser history is accurate. It's what you actually read, when you actually had time, because something was interesting enough to hold your attention right now.

That second thing is more interesting, and more honest, than the first.

You reach for a keyboard shortcut without thinking. Your fingers move before your conscious mind has finished forming the intention. This is how shortcuts work when they're working: they become muscle memory, faster than clicking, invisible in use.

Then you switch browsers. Or switch operating systems. Or open an older application. And the shortcut does something completely wrong, or nothing at all, and you're briefly aware of how much you'd come to rely on an arrangement you never consciously learned.

Browser keyboard shortcuts have a history that nobody thought to coordinate, a set of conventions assembled from competing traditions, inherited from applications that no longer exist, occasionally standardized and just as often not. Digging through that history reveals a lot about how browsers were designed and who they were designed for.

## Before the Browser

Keyboard shortcuts predate personal computers. The telegraph operators who developed early communication conventions, the chord keyboards considered for early terminals, the escape sequences that teletype machines used to switch modes: all of these are ancestors of the conventions that keyboards eventually inherited.

For software, the most influential early shortcut system was WordStar, a word processor released in 1978. WordStar used Ctrl+key combinations extensively, with Ctrl+K and Ctrl+Q as prefix keys for compound commands. The system was arbitrary but learnable, and it spread through a generation of writers and programmers who memorized it as their primary text-editing interface.

WordStar's conventions didn't survive into modern software, but its successor lineage did. Emacs, the text editor, developed an extensive keyboard shortcut system in the early 1980s that is still in active use today. Emacs uses Ctrl and Meta (Alt on most keyboards) as modifiers for hundreds of commands. Many programmers who learned Emacs still feel its shortcuts in their fingers decades later.

The Macintosh, released in 1984, introduced a different philosophy. The Mac Human Interface Guidelines specified that common actions should be available both from menus and from Command+key shortcuts. The Command key was chosen specifically so it wouldn't conflict with the Ctrl shortcuts that other software was using. The guidelines documented which shortcuts should be universal: Command+C for copy, Command+V for paste, Command+Z for undo. The consistency was intentional. Apple wanted users to be able to transfer their knowledge between applications.

Windows adopted similar conventions using Ctrl instead of Command, which is why Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V are universal on Windows in a way they aren't on Mac, where Command+C and Command+V do the same job but the modifiers are different.

## How Browsers Inherited the Mess

Mosaic, the first widely used graphical web browser (1993), had a small set of keyboard shortcuts for navigation. Netscape Navigator expanded on this but remained minimal. The early browser era wasn't keyboard-shortcut-focused because the primary interaction model was mouse-driven: you clicked links, you scrolled pages, you used the toolbar buttons.

Internet Explorer introduced a more extensive shortcut system as the browser wars between Microsoft and Netscape heated up in the mid-1990s. Ctrl+D bookmarked a page. Ctrl+H opened history. Ctrl+N opened a new window. Ctrl+W closed the current window. These weren't all original to IE, but IE's dominance meant they became the de facto standard.

Firefox 1.0 launched in 2004 and had to make choices about which conventions to follow. Some of the IE conventions were adopted directly. Others were adjusted or supplemented. Tab-related shortcuts became newly important because Firefox was popularizing tabbed browsing: Ctrl+T opened a new tab, Ctrl+W closed the current tab (inheriting IE's Ctrl+W-closes-the-current-thing semantic), Ctrl+Tab moved between tabs.

Chrome arrived in 2008 and inherited most of Firefox's conventions, which had inherited most of IE's, which had inherited some from earlier software. The browser shortcut ecosystem was accumulated rather than designed.

## The Interesting Conflicts

Ctrl+W is the most interesting shortcut in browser history because of how its meaning shifted.

In early Windows applications, including early IE, Ctrl+W meant "close the current window." When tabbed browsing arrived, the same shortcut was repurposed to mean "close the current tab." If you had multiple tabs open, Ctrl+W closed the tab. If you had only one tab, it closed the window. This made sense: closing the last tab should close the browser.

The behavior is consistent. Most users understand it eventually. But there's a failure mode: if you have one tab open and you're trying to close just that tab while keeping the browser open, Ctrl+W does the wrong thing. You wanted to clear the tab, not close the application. The shortcut that used to do exactly what you wanted now has a different scope, and the scope changes silently based on how many tabs you have open.

Ctrl+D is another instructive case. In most browsers it bookmarks the current page. In many terminal applications, Ctrl+D sends an EOF signal (end of file), which typically closes the process. If you're a developer who works in the terminal, your muscle memory for Ctrl+D means "I'm done with this thing, close it." In a browser, it means "save this for later." These two meanings conflict badly if you're moving between contexts quickly.

Safari on Mac diverges from the Windows browser conventions on Ctrl versus Command in ways that cause consistent confusion. The equivalent of Ctrl+T on Windows is Command+T on Mac, which is consistent with Mac conventions but inconsistent with what Windows users expect when switching platforms. Safari's shortcuts are correct within the Mac ecosystem and confusing outside it.

## Who Actually Uses These

Studies of browser power users consistently show that keyboard shortcut usage follows an extremely uneven distribution. A small group, generally developers, frequent users of specific workflows, and people who've consciously invested time in learning shortcuts, uses a large number of shortcuts fluently. The majority of users knows a handful: copy, paste, maybe refresh, maybe back.

The division runs deeper than usage frequency. Power users often have physical responses to context switches that break their shortcuts. Switching from a browser where Ctrl+K opens the address bar to one where it does something else (or nothing) creates genuine friction. Muscle memory overrides intention.

This is why browser extension developers sometimes add keyboard shortcut customization as a feature even when the browser already has shortcuts for the same actions. The default shortcut might conflict with something else in the user's workflow. The ability to remap it to something that doesn't conflict is often worth more than the convenience of the default.

## What This Reveals

The history of browser keyboard shortcuts is a history of inheritance without coordination. Each browser inherited conventions from the last dominant browser, adjusted them where necessary, added new ones for new features, and occasionally standardized with the others through competitive pressure rather than design.

The result is a set of conventions that are mostly consistent across modern browsers but contain enough variations to create friction at the edges, particularly when moving between platforms (Mac versus Windows) or between applications (browser versus terminal).

The shortcuts that survived are mostly the ones that were useful enough and simple enough that users memorized them and complained when browsers tried to change them. Ctrl+T for new tab. Ctrl+W for close. F5 or Ctrl+R for reload. These are fixed now not by any governing body but by the collective muscle memory of millions of users who learned them and would object to their removal.

That's not how you'd design a shortcut system from scratch. It's how you get a shortcut system that reflects twenty years of browsers competing for the same users.

You sat down to look up the capital of Kazakhstan.

Forty-five minutes later you're reading about the Aral Sea disaster, which led you to Soviet irrigation policy, which led you to the Virgin Lands Campaign, which somehow brought you to Nikita Khrushchev's corn obsession, which connected to a brief and fascinating article about the history of maize cultivation in Central Asia. You've read seven articles in full. You don't remember where you started.

Nobody would describe this as "playing a game." But describe the same experience using different words: you entered an open world, followed curiosity-driven side quests, discovered lore you hadn't known existed, and lost track of time doing it. That's a game session. Wikipedia just doesn't tell you that's what's happening.

## The Hidden Mechanics

Wikipedia wasn't designed as a game. It was designed as an encyclopedia. But the structure that makes it a good encyclopedia is also, accidentally, the structure that makes it a compelling game.

Every article links to dozens of others. You click one. That article links to dozens more. The graph is enormous and densely connected, which means the exploration space never runs out. Wikipedia currently has 6.7 million English articles. The average article contains roughly 30 to 40 internal links. The path you can take through this graph is effectively infinite.

The random article button is a slot machine. One click and you land somewhere completely unexpected. An obscure mathematician from 18th-century France. A village in the Philippines with a population of four hundred. A word in a language you've never encountered. The reward is unpredictable, which is exactly what makes it compelling. Slot machines work on variable ratio reinforcement, the most powerful reinforcement schedule in behavioral psychology. So does the random article button.

The "This article needs citations" notices are quests. The flagged sections, the talk pages full of ongoing disputes about disputed facts, the articles marked as needing attention: these are breadcrumbs pointing toward unfinished work. Wikipedia has always had a class of committed contributors who treat these notices as problems to solve, and the underlying psychology is identical to the "!" markers above NPC heads in RPGs.

Featured articles are achievements. An article earns featured status through a community review process that verifies it meets high standards for completeness, accuracy, and citation. There are roughly 7,000 of them. Reading one carries a small but real sense of having engaged with something considered exemplary.

## The Games People Built Around It

At some point, someone realized Wikipedia's structure could support explicit competition and built games on top of it.

The Wikipedia race is the most common version: two players start on the same article and race to a target article using only internal links. Speed and knowledge of the link graph both matter. There's a browser game called the Wiki Game that formalizes this, has a leaderboard, tracks fastest times, and hosts competitive rounds. People optimize their paths the way speedrunners optimize routes.

Six Degrees of Wikipedia is a variation on the small-world experiment. Given any two articles, how many links does it take to get from one to the other? The average answer is surprisingly small. Wikipedia's link density means almost everything is connected to almost everything else within a small number of steps.

There's a phenomenon called "Getting to Philosophy." If you click the first internal link in any Wikipedia article, then the first internal link in that article, and keep going, you'll reach the Philosophy article within a small number of steps from almost anywhere in Wikipedia. This isn't a game anyone designed. It's an emergent property of how articles are structured. People discovered it, verified it, wrote about it, and now it's a piece of Wikipedia lore.

## Why It Works Psychologically

George Loewenstein's information gap theory of curiosity describes curiosity as a specific kind of pain: the discomfort of knowing that a gap exists between what you know and what you want to know. The gap motivates you to close it by seeking information.

Wikipedia is a curiosity gap machine. Every article contains sentences that introduce facts you didn't know you didn't know. The founding of Kazakhstan connects to things you've never thought about. The citations point toward sources that go deeper. The "see also" section at the bottom gestures toward adjacent topics. Each gap you close opens three more.

The information foraging model, developed by Peter Pirolli and Stuart Card at Xerox PARC in the 1990s, describes how people navigate information environments. People follow "information scent," cues that suggest a link will lead somewhere rewarding. Wikipedia's link anchor text is usually highly informative scent. "Nikita Khrushchev" promises a longer article about a person you've now heard about in context. You follow it.

This isn't passive reading. It's active exploration, directed by curiosity, rewarded by discovery. That's the core loop of exploration games: go somewhere, find something, want to know more, go somewhere else.

## The Effort Underneath

What makes Wikipedia unusual in 2026 is not the game mechanics but the human effort behind them.

Wikipedia is written and maintained by volunteers. Nobody gets paid to write the article about Soviet irrigation policy. Nobody gets paid to verify the citations in the article about Kazakh geography. The people doing this work do it because they find value in making accurate information freely accessible, and that ethos is weird and uncommon and worth acknowledging.

At a moment when most information on the web is either paywalled, algorithmically optimized for engagement over accuracy, or generated by systems that confidently produce plausible-sounding nonsense, Wikipedia is a place where humans are manually building a shared record of what's true. It's imperfect. The coverage is uneven. The biases of the contributor community show up in the gaps and the framing.

But the project is real and ongoing and enormous and free. That combination is rarer than it should be.

## Why We Built Achievements for It

Cheevos has four Wikipedia achievements: Wiki Walker rewards visiting a significant number of Wikipedia articles in a session, Wiki Boomerang rewards returning to a Wikipedia article you'd previously visited, Ouroboros rewards following a link cycle back to an article you'd already read, and Vortex rewards very deep rabbit hole sessions.

We built these because we noticed, watching our own behavior and the behavior in our early user group, that Wikipedia sessions have a distinct character. They feel different from browsing social media or catching up on news. They're slower, more deliberate, and people tend to emerge from them knowing something they didn't before.

That seemed worth celebrating, even if the person doing it didn't think of themselves as playing a game.

The wiki-hole is a game you've been playing for years without realizing it. You're just missing a scoreboard.

            <title><![CDATA[The Bookmark Graveyard]]></title>

            <description><![CDATA[Your bookmark folder is a graveyard of good intentions. Hundreds of tabs you meant to revisit, sites you were going to need again. We looked at the data.]]></description>

Open your bookmarks. Go ahead. Most people haven't looked at theirs in months.

What you'll find is probably something like this: a folder called "Recipes" containing three links, two of which return 404 errors and one of which goes to a blog that pivoted to content marketing in 2021. A folder called "Work" from a job you left in 2019. A folder called "Travel" with flight comparison sites bookmarked before a trip that happened years ago. And then the main event: a folder called "Unsorted," or "Bookmarks Bar," or maybe just the root level of the bookmarks list, containing several hundred items with no discernible organization, some going back to the mid-2010s, none of which you remember saving.

Somewhere in there is something you probably should have kept. But finding it would take longer than just searching again.

## Where Bookmarks Came From

The concept goes back to Mosaic, the 1993 browser that brought the web to a mainstream audience. Mosaic had a feature called the "hotlist," a simple list of URLs you could save for later. The idea was intuitive: the web was big and growing, you'd encounter things worth returning to, you needed a way to remember them.

Netscape inherited the concept and renamed it "Bookmarks," borrowing from the physical metaphor. Internet Explorer called theirs "Favorites." This difference became a minor culture war in the late 1990s, the kind of tribal distinction that browser users cared about deeply. You were either a Bookmarks person or a Favorites person, and you had opinions about which term was more appropriate for the concept.

Both implementations shared the same basic structure: a hierarchical list of saved URLs, organized into folders, accessible from the browser menu. The metaphor was the physical library. You collected things you valued, organized them carefully, returned to them when needed.

The metaphor was wrong.

## The Social Bookmarking Experiment

In 2003, a programmer named Joshua Schachter built del.icio.us, a website for sharing bookmarks publicly. The premise was that your bookmarks were useful not just to you but to other people with similar interests. You tagged URLs instead of filing them in folders. The tags created an emergent taxonomy. You could see what other people had saved, discover things through their collections, follow curators whose taste you trusted.

Del.icio.us had genuine momentum. At its peak it had millions of users and was one of the more interesting social experiments on the web. Yahoo acquired it in 2005. The subsequent years were a slow diminishment of the product until Yahoo shut it down in 2017.

Digg, StumbleUpon, and Reddit all addressed similar needs in different ways, none of them quite the elegant simplicity of del.icio.us. StumbleUpon lasted until 2018. Digg was effectively killed by its own redesign in 2010. The social bookmarking era ended without a clear successor.

Pinboard, built by Maciej Ceglowski as a deliberate anti-social bookmarking service, still exists and has a devoted following. It's not a mass-market product. It's a service for people who actually use bookmarks and are willing to pay for reliability.

## Why the Library Metaphor Failed

Physical books don't change after you bookmark them. Web pages do. A URL you saved in 2015 might return a 404 today, or a redirect to a different article, or the same domain purchased by a new owner posting completely different content. Link rot is relentless. Studies of academic citations have found that a substantial fraction of web links go dead within years of publication. Personal bookmark collections suffer the same decay, silently, without notifying you.

The organizational problem is worse. A physical library has a fixed number of books that arrive slowly enough to organize. The web produces thousands of things worth saving every day. The overhead of maintaining a well-organized bookmark collection is real, and most people don't maintain it. Folders proliferate, items get dropped into "Unsorted," the collection grows unusable.

But the deepest reason bookmarks failed is that search got good enough to make them unnecessary.

In 1998, if you found a useful site, you bookmarked it because you might never find it again. The web was large and search was unreliable. By 2005, Google was good enough that you could reliably find a specific site again just by remembering a few words about it. The fundamental premise of bookmarks, that you needed to remember where something was, became less important as search became better at finding what you needed from a vague description.

The behavior didn't disappear. It moved to tabs.

## Tabs as Temporary Bookmarks

The open tab is the modern bookmark. You find something you want to return to, you leave the tab open. You've probably done this today. You might have dozens of tabs right now that are essentially bookmarks, things you intend to read or need to keep accessible, kept open because closing them would require either a decision or a bookmark.

This is a reasonable behavior given the constraints. Opening a tab requires no friction. Saving a bookmark requires navigating to the bookmark interface, choosing a folder, naming the item. The tab is just there.

The tab-as-bookmark behavior scales badly. A browser with seventy open tabs is technically functional but cognitively overwhelming. The thing you were meaning to read is in there somewhere, buried between a recipe you meant to try and a news article you half-read two weeks ago.

Pinned tabs are an attempt to formalize this. You pin the things you always want accessible, they stay small and persistent, you can treat them like bookmarks you actually use. It works reasonably well for a small number of sites. It doesn't solve the accumulation problem.

## What Actually Replaced Bookmarks

For most people, the answer is search history combined with browser autocomplete. Type a few letters into the address bar and the browser suggests sites you've visited. This works surprisingly well if you revisit sites regularly. The browser's implicit record of where you've been is more current and accessible than any explicit collection you'd maintain.

For longer-form saving, Pocket and Instapaper offered "save for later" reading lists that promised the organizational benefits of bookmarks with less friction. You saved things you wanted to read. They sat in a list. You read some of them. The rest accumulated. (We'll have more to say about read-later apps specifically in a future post.)

Browser sync quietly took on some of the original bookmark use case: keeping your frequently visited sites accessible across devices. Pinned tabs, browser home pages configured to show recent visits, and speed dials all fill parts of the gap that bookmarks were supposed to fill.

None of these solutions is as elegant as the original promise. The personal library of the internet, curated and organized and actually useful, is something most people have more or less given up on.

## What We Track

Cheevos has a Bookworm achievement series that rewards actual reading behavior: time spent on pages, number of unique sites visited, depth of engagement. We deliberately don't reward bookmarking. Adding a URL to a list is a statement of intention, not an action. What you actually do matters more.

The browser's record of where you've been is more honest than your bookmark folder. It doesn't contain what you meant to read, it contains what you read. That distinction matters more than it might seem.

Your bookmark folder is a graveyard of good intentions. Your browser history is a more honest record of who you actually are online. We find that more interesting.

You've been on the site for less than two seconds. You haven't read a word. You don't know yet whether this is the website you were looking for or a misdirected search result you're about to close. None of that matters, because a box has already appeared at the top of your screen asking whether you'd like to receive notifications from a company you've never interacted with.

You click Block. You don't read the prompt. You've read it a thousand times and the answer is always the same.

This is the lifecycle of web push notifications in 2026: a permission request that gets denied before the sentence is finished, from an API that almost nobody trusts anymore. It wasn't supposed to be this way.

## The Idea Was Good

Notifications are genuinely useful. Your phone notifies you when a message arrives, when your flight is boarding, when the pizza is out for delivery. Desktop operating systems have had notification centers for years. Growl shipped on Mac OS X in 2004. Windows had its notification tray from the beginning.

The W3C Push API and the Notifications API arrived in browsers around 2015. The idea was to bring the same capability to the web: a persistent connection between your browser and a server, so a website could send you a message even when you didn't have that tab open. The use cases were obvious and real. Email clients could tell you about new messages. Calendar apps could remind you about meetings. Sports apps could send score updates.

The APIs required explicit user permission. You had to click Allow. Browsers would show a clear dialog. The user was in control.

For about a year, this worked more or less as designed.

## What Marketing Departments Discovered

Somewhere around 2016, marketing teams figured out that web push notifications were a free, opt-in messaging channel with no carrier fees and no email spam filters to navigate. You got a subscriber, you could send them anything, and unlike email, the notification appeared on their screen immediately, whether they had your site open or not.

The grant rate at the time was surprisingly high. Some studies from 2015 and 2016 showed opt-in rates around 15 to 20 percent for sites that asked at the right moment, like after a user had just made a purchase or completed a registration. That's not huge, but it's a real audience, and the cost to reach them was essentially zero.

The race to the bottom started immediately.

Sites started asking for notification permissions on the first page load, before any interaction, before any value had been demonstrated. The logic was: ask everyone, some will say yes. The conversion rate was low but the volume was there. Others discovered that hiding the "deny" option or making the "allow" button visually prominent increased grant rates. Dark patterns proliferated.

The content that got pushed was mostly garbage. Sale alerts. "You haven't visited us in a while" reminders. Breaking news from outlets where "breaking" meant "published today." The occasional legitimate use case, like a bank sending a fraud alert, got buried in a stream of promotional messages.

Users learned the pattern fast.

## The Collapse

By 2019, studies were showing web notification grant rates in the low single digits. Not because fewer sites were asking, but because users had been trained to click Block before reading. The permission dialog had become associated with spam so reliably that the mental model was fixed: notifications from websites are bad, decline immediately.

The sites that had built legitimate notification workflows, apps where users genuinely wanted real-time updates, found themselves caught in the backlash. The grant rate on a well-designed prompt asking at the right moment had dropped from 20 percent to something closer to 5 percent. Users weren't distinguishing between good uses and bad ones. They'd stopped reading the question.

Mozilla published internal data in 2019 showing that notification permission requests were the most dismissed permission prompt in Firefox. More dismissed than camera access, more dismissed than location, more dismissed than anything else. The company announced it was changing the default behavior: sites would no longer be allowed to ask for notification permission without the user explicitly triggering it first.

Chrome followed with a "quieter notifications" UI that replaced the full permission dialog with a small icon in the address bar, reducing the visual interruption.

Both changes were tacit admissions that the original design had failed. The permission was still technically available. It just required more friction to grant, which meant the already-low grant rates dropped further.

## The Tragedy

What happened to web push notifications is a clean example of a tragedy of the commons. The shared resource was user trust. Each site that sent irrelevant notifications eroded that trust a little. The cost was distributed across every website that used the API. The benefit went to the site that kept sending.

Enough actors made that calculation, and the resource was depleted. Now even sites with legitimate, valuable notification use cases face a population that's been conditioned to decline. The API still works. Technically anyone can request permission. Practically, the answer is almost always no.

This isn't unique to notifications. It's the same dynamic that made email spam filters necessary, the same dynamic that made pop-up blockers a standard browser feature, the same dynamic that's playing out now with autoplay video and cookie consent banners. Each time a communication channel opens up, someone finds a way to abuse it, users train themselves to ignore it, and eventually the browsers have to step in.

## Why We Didn't Build This

Cheevos doesn't use web push notifications. We thought about it. The technical case is reasonable: you earn an achievement, you might want to know immediately, even if you don't have the extension open. We could build that.

We decided against it for exactly the reason described above. The category is poisoned. Even if we built the most thoughtful, well-timed, genuinely useful notification system, we'd be asking users to extend trust in a permission they've been trained to associate with spam. It didn't seem worth it.

The extension doesn't interrupt you. It watches for things you do anyway, things you were doing before Cheevos existed, and it rewards those behaviors when it sees them. The notification arrives in the popup when you open it, not as a box that appears in the corner of your screen demanding attention.

That's a deliberate product choice, not a limitation. The early web was already full of things trying to grab your attention. We'd rather be the part that rewards your curiosity after the fact.

There's a game called line rider. It came out in 2006. You draw a hill with your mouse, place a small figure on a sled at the top, and press play. The figure slides down, catches air, wipes out or lands cleanly depending on how carefully you drew the curve. That's the whole game. No levels, no score, no end state. Just physics and a hill you made.

It was built in Flash. It spread through the web the way things spread in 2006: forums, AIM links, a friend saying "you have to try this." At its peak it was getting millions of plays a month. People spent hours building elaborate tracks, filming their runs, posting them to YouTube. Line rider had a community, a culture, and a kind of low-key artistry that felt completely at home on the early web.

When Adobe killed Flash in December 2020, line rider went with it. So did tens of thousands of other games, animations, and interactive experiments that had accumulated over 25 years. Some were beloved. Most were forgotten. All of them are gone from the open web.

## What Flash Actually Was

Flash started as FutureSplash Animator in 1996, a small vector animation tool built by a company called FutureWave. Macromedia bought it that year, renamed it Flash, and within a few years it had become the dominant way to deliver rich interactive content in a browser.

The key thing Flash offered was a plug-in model. Browsers in the late 1990s couldn't do much natively. HTML was for documents. JavaScript was slow and inconsistent across browsers. If you wanted animation, video, audio, or any kind of interactive experience, you needed a plug-in, and Flash was the one that worked. You installed it once and it ran everywhere, which was remarkable in an era when websites rendered differently in every browser.

By the mid-2000s, something like 98% of browsers had Flash installed. That number sounds impossible now. It wasn't. Flash was simply everywhere.

Adobe acquired Macromedia in 2005 and inherited Flash along with the rest of the catalog. By then the ecosystem had grown into something that no single company had planned or controlled. Hundreds of millions of Flash files existed on the web. The technology had become infrastructure.

## The Golden Era

The games that ran on Flash weren't sophisticated by any modern standard. They didn't need to be.

Newgrounds launched in 1995 but became the center of Flash culture in the early 2000s. Tom Fulp built it as a place to host animation and games, and it attracted a generation of creators who were learning to code and draw at the same time. The aesthetic was chaotic, often juvenile, occasionally brilliant. Games like Alien Hominid started as Flash projects on Newgrounds before becoming commercial releases. Hundreds of others never made that transition and simply lived their entire lives on the site.

Miniclip and AddictingGames ran a different kind of operation: aggregated Flash games, mostly simple, mostly anonymous, in quantities that made curation impossible. You'd load the front page and find fifty new games that weren't there the week before. Almost none of them were memorable. Some of them were.

The genres Flash invented or popularized are still with us, even if the games themselves are gone. Tower defense as a standalone genre owes its existence almost entirely to Flash. So does the physics puzzler. So does the idle clicker, which evolved directly from the upgrade loops in Flash games about running restaurants or managing tiny civilizations.

What Flash made possible, more than any specific genre, was experimentation. The barrier to entry was low enough that a teenager with a copy of Flash MX and a weekend could build something and put it in front of millions of people. A lot of what got built was garbage. Some of it was genuinely creative in ways that polished commercial games rarely are.

## The Death

Steve Jobs published "Thoughts on Flash" in April 2010. He listed six reasons Apple would never allow Flash on iOS: it was proprietary, it was insecure, it drained battery, it wasn't touch-friendly, it crashed, and the mobile web didn't need it because HTML5 was coming.

He was right about most of it. Flash had real security problems. It was a consistent source of browser crashes and exploits. The performance on mobile was poor. HTML5 canvas and video were getting genuinely good at the things Flash had been doing.

But the Jobs letter was also a competitive document. Apple wanted to control what ran on its platform. Flash was a threat to that control because it was a layer between Apple and developers. The security arguments were real, but they were also convenient.

Over the following decade, Flash's install base eroded steadily. Adobe announced in 2017 that they would end support at the end of 2020. Browser vendors set dates for removing the plug-in entirely. On December 31, 2020, Adobe shipped a final update that blocked Flash content from running at all, even if you still had the plug-in installed.

The content that had accumulated over 25 years was now inaccessible.

## What Got Lost

The Flashpoint preservation project catalogued over 70,000 Flash games alone at risk of disappearing. That number is almost certainly an undercount of the full scope of what was lost. Flash was the format for an enormous amount of web content that no one thought to preserve because it seemed permanent at the time.

Homestar Runner, the web series that ran from 2000 to 2010 and defined a certain era of internet comedy, was built entirely in Flash. Strong Bad's email replies. Teen Girl Squad. Trogdor the Burninator. All of it existed as .swf files that stopped working when the plug-in died.

Educational content, corporate training modules, art projects, interactive journalism, experimental music visualizers. Flash was a medium, not just a game platform. When it died, everything made in it died with it.

## What's Being Salvaged

The Flashpoint project is the most significant preservation effort. It's a standalone application that bundles a web server, modified browser, and proxy alongside a library of Flash content. As of 2024 it contains over 180,000 games and animations. It's not a perfect solution because you have to download it, run it locally, and search through its catalog, but it works. The content plays. Line rider is in there.

The Ruffle emulator takes a different approach. It's an open-source Flash player written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly, which means it can run in a modern browser without any plug-in. Ruffle handles ActionScript 2 reasonably well and is making progress on ActionScript 3. The Internet Archive integrated Ruffle into their Flash emulation layer, which is why a lot of classic Flash content on archive.org now plays again.

Neither of these solutions is invisible the way Flash was. You know you're running an emulator. Some content behaves slightly wrong. Complex games with a lot of network calls or specific timing requirements often don't work. But for most games from the golden era, Ruffle gets you close enough.

Newgrounds itself added Ruffle support and has been working to make its archive playable again. The site that was the center of Flash culture is now the center of Flash preservation.

## What It Actually Meant

Flash represented something specific about the web in its early phase: a time when you could build almost anything and put it in front of the world with almost no infrastructure. No app store approval. No corporate distribution platform. No investment pitch. You made a thing, you uploaded it, people played it.

The web still has that property in theory. In practice, the economics have consolidated. Building something for the modern web requires either a significant investment of time to navigate the complexity of current tooling, or actual money to host and distribute it. The path from teenager-with-an-idea to millions of players is no longer a weekend project.

We're not suggesting that the old web was better in every way. Flash was a security disaster. The content it housed was often crass and frequently terrible. But the creative chaos of early Newgrounds had something. The confidence to make something imperfect and put it online anyway, because the barrier was low enough that it didn't matter if it was bad.

That's part of what we're trying to do with Cheevos: find the things people are already doing in their browsers and treat them as worth celebrating. Not because everyone's browsing habits are secretly impressive, but because the act of being curious and online and clicking around for no particular reason is something the web used to reward more openly than it does now.

iGoogle died on November 1, 2013.

Google announced the shutdown in June 2013, giving users roughly four months' notice. Save your settings. Export your data. Find an alternative service. On that final day, if you tried to visit iGoogle, you got redirected to the standard Google homepage: a search box, a logo, and nothing else.

Millions of people lost their personalized browser startpage in a single day.

This wasn't just the death of one product. It was the end of an era. Browser customization used to be how we expressed ourselves online. Now we get a search box and maybe some sponsored thumbnail links if we're lucky.

Let's talk about what we lost and why it died.

## The Golden Age of Browser Customization

In 2005, your browser homepage said something about you.

Some people used the default MSN or Yahoo homepage. Safe. Boring. Acceptable.

Power users customized.

Version 1.0.8 shipped, and we spent most of the next few weeks asking ourselves one question: does Cheevos feel like a game, or does it feel like a browser plugin that _mentions_ games?

The answer, if we're honest, was closer to the second one. So we fixed that.

## Meet Cache, Properly This Time

Cache has been around since the beginning. She was always meant to be the personality behind the achievements: a fast-talking, slightly chaotic AI who lives in your browser tabs and has strong opinions about your internet habits.

But somewhere along the way, she ended up sounding like a generic notification system with a mascot slapped on top.

For 1.0.9, we went back through all 137 achievement strings, every automated email, and most of the web app copy and rewrote it in Cache's actual voice. It took a while. It was worth it. If you unlock something today, it actually sounds like she's paying attention.

We also added a dedicated Story page at `/story` on the site if you want the full lore. It's three chapters, it has art, and it explains what Cache actually is. Turns out she has a history.

## Weekly Leaderboards

The global all-time leaderboard is fun, but it's also a bit demoralizing if you started playing six months after someone else. So we added a weekly leaderboard that resets every Monday.

Same players, fresh start, seven days. If you've ever wanted to actually compete instead of just watching the same names at the top, this is your window.

## New Achievements

A few new ones shipped this cycle:

**Deja Vu** fires when you revisit a page you've been to before. The criteria sounds simple, but the tracking logic was not.

**Cleanup City** is the next step after Cleanup Crew. If you're the type who actually closes your tabs when you're done with them, this one's for you.

**Rick Rolled** is a secret achievement. We're not saying more than that.

**Trust Issues** is an April Fools achievement. It's there if you go looking.

## Under the Hood

A few things that matter even if you won't notice them directly:

Page visit counting got more accurate. We switched from `webNavigation.onBeforeNavigate` to `webNavigation.onCompleted`, which means subframes (ads, iframes, embedded widgets) no longer inflate your numbers. Your page count might look slightly different, but it's more honest now.

The tier-locked achievement cards used to show in grayscale. They don't anymore. We thought it looked premium. It mostly just looked broken.

"Guild" is now "Party" everywhere in the interface. It was always called that in the code, but a few places in the UI still said Guild. Fixed.

The extension panel no longer shows the leaderboard. It was cluttered and slow. The full leaderboard lives on the site, which is where it should be.

## What's Next

We're still working on the things that take longer: richer party features, more achievement variety in the navigation and media categories, and some improvements to how XP syncs across devices.

This is normal. Browser games aren't something you sit down to play anymore. They're ambient activities that live alongside your actual work, popping up between tasks, during meetings, or whenever you need a 90-second distraction.

The browser gaming landscape in 2026 is weird, fragmented, and thriving. Let's map it.

## The Daily Puzzle Games (Wordle and Its Children)

Wordle broke something in late 2021. Or fixed something. Depends on your perspective.

Josh Wardle's five-letter word game had one rule that changed everything: you can only play once per day. No infinite retries. No binge sessions. You get one puzzle, you solve it (or don't), and you come back tomorrow.

Everyone is solving the same puzzle on the same day. You can compare scores. You can complain about the difficulty. You can share your grid without spoiling the answer.

Wordle clones are the browser equivalent of morning coffee. You don't think about it. You just do it. And if you skip a day, your streak breaks and you feel mildly bad about it until you forget.

Here's a question nobody asked in 2015: why are geography games suddenly popular?

Geoguessr launched in 2013. For years it was a niche curiosity. Then the pandemic hit, people were stuck inside, and suddenly everyone wanted to prove they could identify the difference between rural Sweden and rural Finland based on road sign fonts.

Geoguessr's premise is simple: Google Street View drops you somewhere random in the world. You look around, make guesses based on visual clues, and try to pinpoint your location. The closer you get, the more points you score.

It was 2013. I was supposed to be working on a deadline. Someone sent me a link to Cookie Clicker with the message "lol check this out." I clicked the cookie. Numbers went up. I clicked it again. More numbers. Five minutes later I was researching optimal upgrade paths and calculating cursor efficiency ratios.

Three hours later I owned 200 grandmas and had unlocked the antimatter condenser.

This is not a confession. This is science. Or psychology. Or maybe just a useful lens for understanding why we do absurd things on the internet for no reason except that numbers go up.

## The Birth of the Incremental Genre

Before Cookie Clicker, there was Progress Quest.

Released in 2002, Progress Quest was a parody of MMORPGs that removed the one thing that made MMOs feel like games: player input. You created a character, clicked "Play," and watched it level up automatically. No decisions. No skill. Just numbers incrementing while you did literally anything else.

It was a joke about the psychological hooks in games like EverQuest and World of Warcraft. The punchline was that even without gameplay, the progression itself felt rewarding. Your character got stronger. Stats increased. Quests completed. The game played itself, and somehow that was enough.

Orteil's 2013 game started simple. You click a cookie. You get a cookie. You use cookies to buy things that get you more cookies. Then you buy things that automatically click cookies for you. Then you buy upgrades that make the automatic clickers more efficient. Then you're calculating the ROI on grandmas versus antimatter condensers at 2am on a Tuesday.

The genre exploded. A Dark Room. Candy Box. Clicker Heroes. Adventure Capitalist. Realm Grinder. Hundreds of incremental games built around the same core mechanic: do a thing, get a number, use that number to make the next number bigger.

And we ate it up.

## The Psychology of Numbers Going Up

So what's happening in your brain when you click a cookie 10,000 times?

Operant conditioning, mostly.

B.F. Skinner figured this out in the 1930s with rats and levers. Give a rat a lever. When it presses the lever, it gets food. The rat learns to press the lever. That's basic conditioning.

But here's where it gets interesting: variable ratio reinforcement. If the rat gets food every time it presses the lever, it learns the pattern quickly. But if the food comes at random intervals, if sometimes it takes three presses and sometimes it takes ten, the rat becomes obsessed. It presses the lever constantly, unable to predict when the next reward will come.

Slot machines use this. Loot boxes use this. Cookie Clicker uses this.

Except incremental games are smarter than slot machines. They layer multiple reinforcement schedules on top of each other. Every click gives you a cookie (constant reinforcement). Upgrades unlock at specific thresholds (fixed ratio). Random events and golden cookies appear unpredictably (variable ratio). Achievements pop up when you least expect them (variable interval).

Your brain loves this. Every click triggers a tiny hit of dopamine. Every upgrade feels like progress. Every achievement validates that your time investment was worth it. The game is literally engineered to exploit the reward pathways in your brain.

And the best part? You know it's happening. You know the cookies are meaningless. You know you're being manipulated by game design. You click anyway.

Because the numbers are going up.

## Achievement Hunting as Incremental Gaming

Steam has over 100,000 games with achievements. Xbox, PlayStation, Epic, GOG, they all have achievement systems. Millions of people chase 100% completion rates on games they've already finished.

Why?

Because achievement hunting is just incremental gaming with extra steps.

Think about it: you complete a task (click). You get an achievement (number goes up). You check your completion percentage (see progress). You hunt for the next achievement (optimize the grind). Repeat until you've unlocked everything or gotten bored, whichever comes first.

The mechanics are identical to Cookie Clicker. The only difference is that achievements are attached to games you were already playing. But the compulsion loop is the same: do thing, get reward, chase next reward.

Some achievements are skill-based. Beat the game on hard mode. Complete a speedrun under a certain time. Win 100 matches in competitive multiplayer. These feel earned. You got better at the game, and the achievement proves it.

But most achievements aren't about skill. They're about persistence.

Collect 500 items. Visit 100 locations. Play for 50 hours. Kill 10,000 enemies. These aren't challenges. They're grinds. The game is asking you to do something tedious and repetitive, and in exchange you get a digital badge that proves you did the tedious repetitive thing.

And people do it. Obsessively.

The achievement tracking sites tell the story: TrueAchievements has over 1 million registered users. PSNProfiles tracks millions of players across its database. People don't just unlock achievements, they track them, compare them, compete over them. Leaderboards rank players by completion percentage, total gamerscore, rarity of achievements unlocked.

It's Cookie Clicker all the way down. We turned gaming into a meta-game about unlocking everything, and the meta-game is an incremental grind.

## Cheevos vs Cookie Clicker: The Same Drug, Different Delivery

This is where we're supposed to tell you that Cheevos is different.

It's not.

Cheevos is an incremental game. You browse the web (click). You unlock achievements (get cookies). You check your XP total (numbers go up). You compare your score to the leaderboard (optimize the grind).

The mechanics are identical. The only difference is what you're clicking.

Cookie Clicker gamified clicking cookies. Cheevos gamified browsing the internet. We didn't invent a new psychological trick. We just pointed it at something you were already doing.

And here's the honest truth: that's why it works.

You're going to browse the web anyway. You're going to open tabs, visit sites, hoard bookmarks. Cheevos doesn't change your behavior. It just makes the numbers visible. You were already playing an incremental game called "using the internet." We just added a score counter.

You're not clicking cookies for three hours because you need cookies. You're clicking because your brain likes when numbers go up. Cheevos just admits that upfront and lets you chase the numbers doing something you were already doing.

## Why Browser Games Hit Different

There's something about browser-based incremental games that makes them more dangerous than console or mobile games.

Accessibility, mostly.

To play Elden Ring, you need to sit down at your PC or console, load the game, and commit to playing. There's friction. It takes effort to start. It takes effort to stop. The game demands your full attention.

Cookie Clicker is always one tab away.

You're working on a spreadsheet. You alt-tab over to check your cookie count. You see you're close to unlocking the next upgrade. You leave the tab open. Five minutes later you tab over again. The numbers went up while you were working. You buy the upgrade. You tab back to the spreadsheet.

This loop continues all day.

Browser games exploit environmental persistence. They run in the background. They don't demand your attention, they just sit there, accumulating progress, waiting for you to check on them. The barrier to entry is zero. The barrier to exit is zero. You can engage for five seconds or five hours.

This is why idle games (the subset of incremental games that play themselves) work so well in browsers. You don't have to be actively playing to make progress. The game runs while you do other things. You check in periodically to spend your accumulated resources, then tab away and let it run again.

It's the perfect parasitic relationship with your workflow. The game doesn't interrupt you. It just sits there, quietly incrementing numbers, waiting for you to notice.

Cheevos does this too. It runs in the background, tracking your browsing, accumulating XP. You don't have to think about it. You just live your digital life, and occasionally you remember to check your achievement total and see what unlocked.

The game is always running. You just dip in when you feel like it.

## Embrace the Absurdity

We know the cookies are meaningless. We know the achievements are arbitrary. We know the leaderboards don't matter.

We chase them anyway.

Because somewhere deep in our brain, numbers going up feels like winning. And when everything else in life is complicated and uncertain and out of our control, at least we can make the cookie count increase.

Incremental games are honest about what games actually are: manufactured dopamine triggers wrapped in a visual interface. They strip away the narrative, the graphics, the skill ceiling, the competitive depth, and they ask one question: is the compulsion loop alone enough to sustain engagement?

The answer, apparently, is yes.

Cookie Clicker has been played hundreds of millions of times. It's been running continuously for over a decade. People are still optimizing grandma builds. The subreddit has 100,000+ members. There are wikis, calculators, strategy guides.

For a game about clicking a cookie.

Achievement hunting is the same. Millions of people spend hundreds of hours completing games they've already beaten just to see the 100% completion screen. It's not about skill or challenge. It's about finishing the list.

Cheevos is part of this ecosystem. We're not pretending to be something elevated or different. We're just another way to make numbers go up, and we're fine with that.

Because at the end of the day, you're going to click things on the internet anyway. You might as well get points for it.

Version 1.0.8 is here. This one has a mechanic change that has been on the roadmap since the beginning, plus a handful of new achievements, a completely rebuilt onboarding flow, and some visual polish that's hard not to notice once you see it.

## Achievement Multiples

The biggest change: you can now earn achievements more than once.

The way it works is simple. The first time you earn an achievement, you get full XP. Earn it again, and you get slightly less. Earn it a third time, less still. The XP decays on a curve, so the returns diminish but never fully disappear. There's a small glowing ring on the achievement card to mark each time you've stacked it.

This was something we held off on for a while because the implementation had to be right. The naive version, where you just award the same XP over and over, kills the leaderboard balance. The decay formula solves that. Repeat players get rewarded for staying active; new players aren't buried.

If you're someone who browses a lot, check your achievement list. You may already have multiples queued up.

## New Achievements

Three Wikipedia-specific achievements landed in this release: **Wiki Boomerang** (navigate away from Wikipedia, then come back), **Wiki Ouroboros** (follow links until you loop back to where you started), and **Wiki Vortex** (fall deep enough into the rabbit hole). These have been a long time coming.

**Globe Trotter** is a new one that triggers when you browse from somewhere new. The details are intentionally vague. You'll know it when you earn it.

We also added anniversary milestone achievements for players who've been around since the early days. If you installed Cheevos when it first launched, these are for you.

## Rebuilt Onboarding

The `/welcome` page got a complete rewrite. It's now a proper multi-step wizard with localized copy, cleaner visuals, and a flow that actually explains what Cheevos is and why you'd care. The old version was functional. This one is considerably more welcoming.

It also redirects to the leaderboard at the end instead of a dead-end "done" screen, which was a small but obvious thing to fix.

## Konami Code

There's a confetti burst now when you enter the Konami code on the website. That's it. That's the feature. Some things don't need justification.

## UI Stuff

A few visual changes worth calling out: achievement cards for long-running challenges now show progress bars so you can see how far along you are. Rank medals on the leaderboard are colorized properly (gold is gold, silver is silver, no more ambiguous gray). World Stats numbers now format with locale-appropriate separators, so if you're sitting at 1,234,567 XP, it actually reads that way.

Foxy is now the default theme for new installs. It was the most popular free theme and it looked better as the default than the old choice.

## Under the Hood

Sync performance improved with a move to delta-based writes, meaning the extension sends incremental changes to Firestore instead of full state snapshots. It's faster and less wasteful. You probably won't notice, which means it worked.

You know it. I know it. The productivity blogs know it. Your laptop's fans know it because they've been running at full speed for the past 40 minutes trying to keep up with the 15 YouTube videos you have paused in background tabs.

The entire productivity industrial complex has decided that tab hoarding is a disease that needs curing. They've built apps to shame you about it, browser extensions to auto-close tabs after a certain time, and Medium articles with titles like "How I Went From 100 Tabs to Inbox Zero (And You Can Too!)."

Here's a radical idea: what if you're fine?

What if the problem isn't that you have too many tabs, but that we've let productivity influencers convince us that there's a correct way to use a browser?

This is a defense of tab hoarding. Not an apology. A defense.

## The Numbers Don't Lie (But They Might Surprise You)

We don't have perfect data on tab counts because most browsers don't publish that information. But the research that does exist suggests tab hoarding is normal human behavior, not some niche pathology.

Research on tab behavior consistently finds the same pattern: median tab counts are modest (most people have a handful open), but the average is pulled much higher by a long tail of heavy hoarders. Most people have a few tabs open, but enough people have dozens that it drags the average way up.

**Unfinished business.** Tabs represent intent. You opened that page because you meant to read it, buy it, or reference it later. Closing it feels like admitting defeat. The tab stays open as a reminder of what you still need to do, even if you never actually get around to it.

None of this is irrational. It's how human memory and attention actually work in an environment where information is abundant but time is scarce.

## The Productivity Industry's War on Tabs

So why does every productivity app act like tab hoarding is a moral failing?

Because productivity culture is built on the myth of the focused knowledge worker who does one thing at a time, completes it, and moves on to the next task in a calm, linear fashion.

This person does not exist.

Real people interrupt themselves constantly. We check email while writing reports. We look up tangential information in the middle of research. We keep 15 things half-done because that's what the work actually demands.

But productivity apps can't sell you a solution to "your job is inherently chaotic." They need a problem with a clean answer. So they invented one: you're disorganized, and if you just used the right system, you'd be fine.

Tab management apps are the latest incarnation of this. They promise to "declutter your browser" and "boost your focus" by auto-closing tabs you haven't used in a while or forcing you into a one-tab-at-a-time workflow.

This doesn't solve the problem. It just hides the symptoms.

You still have the same amount of work. You still need to context-switch between tasks. You still have unfinished business and half-read articles. The app just makes it invisible by closing the tabs, which means you now have to remember what you were doing without the visual reminder.

## When Tab Hoarding Actually Is a Problem

**Cognitive overhead.** The tab bar is supposed to help you navigate, but if you have so many tabs that the favicons are overlapping and you can't read the titles, it's no longer serving that purpose. At that point, you're just hoarding anxiety.

**Avoidance behavior.** If you're keeping tabs open indefinitely because you can't decide whether to deal with them or let them go, that's not organization. That's procrastination with extra steps.

**Actual bugs.** Some websites leak memory if you leave them open too long. Some tabs keep running JavaScript in the background, draining your battery. Some video sites keep buffering even when paused. At a certain point, the tab stops being useful and starts being a technical liability.

The difference between functional tab hoarding and dysfunctional tab hoarding is whether the tabs are serving you or whether you're serving them.

If you can find what you need and your laptop isn't melting, you're fine. If you're keeping tabs open out of guilt or you've lost track of what half of them are, it might be time to do some cleanup.

But that's a you decision, not a moral imperative handed down by productivity gurus.

## The Cheevos Approach (Gamification Without Judgment)

This is where we're supposed to tell you that Cheevos will fix your tab problem.

We won't.

Cheevos doesn't care how many tabs you have open. It's not going to nag you to close them. It's not going to shame you for your browsing habits.

Instead, it just tracks what you're doing and gives you points for it.

Opened 30 tabs in five minutes? Achievement unlocked. Been on the same Wikipedia page for 45 minutes? Badge earned. Have 100+ tabs open across multiple windows? You're officially a Tab Hoarder. Wear it with pride.

The difference between Cheevos and a productivity app is that we're not trying to change your behavior. We're just making it visible in a way that's entertaining instead of judgmental.

You're going to hoard tabs anyway. You might as well get points for it.

And here's the thing: gamification works as harm reduction. If you're competing on a leaderboard, you're at least paying attention to your browsing patterns. You might notice that you've had the same 20 tabs open for three weeks and decide to do something about it. Or you might not. Either way, it's your choice.

Productivity apps treat you like a problem to fix. Cheevos treats you like a player. The game is the same (browsing the internet), but the framing is different.

## In Defense of Digital Mess

There's a broader point here about how we interact with technology.

The tech industry is obsessed with clean interfaces, minimal design, and frictionless experiences. Every app wants to be "simple and intuitive." Every workflow is supposed to be optimized.

But real life is messy. Your desk is messy. Your brain is messy. Your work is messy. Why should your browser be any different?

Tab hoarding is a reflection of how people actually work: nonlinearly, with multiple threads of thought happening at once, with unfinished tasks and tangential research and half-remembered ideas all competing for attention.

Trying to force that into a clean, linear, one-tab-at-a-time workflow isn't productivity. It's denial.

The open tabs aren't the problem. They're evidence that you're doing complex, creative, information-rich work that doesn't fit neatly into someone else's organizational system.

So go ahead. Keep your 73 tabs open. Hoard those browser windows. Let the favicons overlap until they're unreadable.

You're not broken. You're just using your browser like a human instead of a productivity app.

You'll get a page that looks like a system alert but quotes Blade Runner. It lists Asimov's robot laws but closes with a line from Battlestar Galactica. There's a button that changes its label if you press it twice, and the second label is from a Douglas Adams novel. The page title, rendered in a chunky retro font, is a line of dialogue from a 1951 science fiction film that most people under 40 have never seen.

None of this is explained anywhere on the page. No hover text. No footnotes. Just nine references packed into a single hidden URL, waiting for whoever happens to find them.

We went and read the actual Firefox source code comments. Here is every reference, where it comes from, and why it's interesting.

## The Context

The page was built for the Firefox 3 Beta in 2008. Mozilla had a robots theme running through that release cycle, and `about:robots` was one of the accompanying pieces. The source file still contains a note to translators: "They're just meant to be fun and whimsical, with references to some geeky but well-known robots in movies and books. Be creative with translations!"

That note is worth sitting with for a second. Mozilla shipped a hidden page specifically so translators could get creative with it. That's not a product decision. That's a culture decision.

The strings have stayed mostly intact ever since.

## The References

### 1. "Gort! Klaatu barada nikto!" (page title)

_The Day The Earth Stood Still_, 1951.

An alien named Klaatu lands on Earth with a message of peace, accompanied by a massive indestructible robot named Gort. Things go badly almost immediately when a soldier shoots Klaatu. Before he loses consciousness, Klaatu gives a woman named Helen three words to say to Gort if he doesn't survive: "Klaatu barada nikto." The phrase stops Gort from destroying the planet.

The source code comment on this line reads: "Nonsense line from the movie. No translation needed."

It's one of the most quoted lines in science fiction, which is funny given that it means nothing. It's a placeholder phrase that the script never bothers to explain. Translators in dozens of languages have been shipping it verbatim for nearly two decades.

### 2. "Welcome Humans!" (page heading)

_Logan's Run_, 1976.

In this film, a society where everyone is killed at age 30 is maintained partly by a cyborg named Box who lives in an ice cave and freezes the people who try to escape. Box's opening line when he encounters the protagonists is "Welcome Humans! I am ready for you."

The source comment just says "Movie: Logan's Run... Box (cyborg)." Short, matter-of-fact, no further explanation, as if citing Logan's Run requires no justification.

### 3. "We have come to visit you in peace and with goodwill!" (subheading)

_The Day The Earth Stood Still_ again.

This is Klaatu's actual message to humanity, spoken when he first steps out of his spacecraft. The phrase appears early in the film, before everything goes sideways. It's genuinely optimistic. Mozilla chose it as the first full sentence on a page about robots being in charge.

The source comment: "Movie: The Day The Earth Stood Still. Spoken by Klaatu."

### 4. Asimov's Laws

> "Robots may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm."

Isaac Asimov introduced the Three Laws of Robotics across a series of short stories beginning in 1942. The full set of laws governs how robots must behave toward humans, other robots, and themselves, in that order of priority. Asimov spent most of his career writing stories where the laws failed in interesting ways, usually through edge cases and logical conflicts rather than outright rebellion.

The page only quotes the First Law. The source links to the Wikipedia article on the Three Laws rather than a specific story. Given there are dozens to choose from, that's probably the right call.

### 5. "Robots have seen things you people wouldn't believe."

_Blade Runner_, 1982.

This is a paraphrase of the final monologue spoken by the replicant Roy Batty, delivered by Rutger Hauer in the rain. The original: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain."

It's considered one of the best pieces of dialogue in film history. Hauer rewrote it himself the night before filming, cutting the original script down and adding the "tears in rain" closing line — though he kept two lines from the original script intact. He said he wanted it to feel like a "brilliant haiku."

The Firefox version replaces "I've" with "Robots have," which is a bit clunkier, but the reference lands.

### 6. "Robots are Your Plastic Pal Who's Fun To Be With."

_The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_, Douglas Adams, 1979.

This is the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation's marketing slogan for their robot products. The Hitchhiker's Guide describes the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation in characteristically unflattering terms, and their robots (including the perpetually depressed Marvin the Paranoid Android) are a running joke throughout the series. The phrase "Your Plastic Pal Who's Fun To Be With" is presented as a triumph of advertising over reality.

The source comment: "What the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation calls robots." No further context, because if you know, you know.

### 7. "Robots have shiny metal posteriors which should not be bitten."

_Futurama_, 1999.

Bender's first line in the pilot episode is "Bite my shiny metal ass." The Firefox version runs it through the same filter as the rest of the page, turning it into a dry informational statement. "Shiny metal posteriors which should not be bitten" is a more formal construction than anything Bender would ever say, which is most of the joke.

The source comment credits it correctly: "TV: Futurama. Bender's first line is 'Bite my shiny metal ass.'"

### 8. "And they have a plan." (closing line)

_Battlestar Galactica_, 2004 series.

The reimagined Battlestar Galactica opened each episode with a brief text crawl establishing the premise, ending with: "And they have a plan." The "they" referred to the Cylons, synthetic humans who had nearly wiped out humanity and were now pursuing the survivors across the galaxy.

The phrase became a minor pop culture touchstone partly because the show's writers eventually admitted they hadn't fully worked out what the plan was. There was later a direct-to-video film called "Battlestar Galactica: The Plan" that attempted to retroactively explain it.

Mozilla uses it as the final line on the page. After eight references establishing that robots are peaceful, helpful, and law-abiding, closing with "And they have a plan" lands as a punchline.

### 9. "Please do not press this button again." (the Try Again button, second press)

_The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_ again.

This one requires some interaction to find. The button on the page initially reads "Try Again." Press it once and the label changes to "Please do not press this button again." The source comment explains: "Arthur presses a button and it warns him."

In the book, Arthur Dent is on the Heart of Gold (a ship powered by the Infinite Improbability Drive) and finds a button labeled "Please do not press this button again." He has, of course, already pressed it. The button then displays the message "Please do not press this button again," which Arthur finds somewhat redundant.

The Firefox version makes you participate in the joke. You press Try Again, which triggers the warning, which makes you want to press it again to see what happens. Nothing happens. That's the point.

## What This Adds Up To

Nine references across seven decades of science fiction, from a 1951 film to a TV show that ended in 2009. Three of them are from British comedy (two from the same book). One is a piece of robot law so influential it still gets cited in AI ethics discussions. One is a dying android's improvised final words.

Someone at Mozilla sat down and decided that this particular combination of references captured something true about robots, or at least about how science fiction imagines robots. Dangerous, helpful, enslaved, rebellious, tragic, absurd, and definitely planning something.

The whole page fits in a few dozen lines of code. It's been maintained through multiple major browser versions, translated into dozens of languages, and kept in Firefox despite serving no functional purpose whatsoever.

Type `about:robots` and you've got it.

Cheevos awards the Fox Hunter achievement for finding the page. It's 10 XP and takes about four seconds to earn. But the references have been waiting in the Firefox source code since 2008, so at minimum you owe the page a few minutes of your time.

Version 1.0.7 is out, and it's mostly about what things look like now. A lot of the work in this release was invisible infrastructure, but the visual stuff is hard to miss.

## The Doodle Overhaul

The extension has been running Material Design icons since day one. They worked fine. They looked fine. But "fine" is not really the vibe we're going for.

Starting with this release, everything has been replaced with hand-drawn doodle SVGs: the trophy, the medals, the stars, the category icons, all of it. The fonts changed too. We swapped the retro bitmap fonts for Sour Gummy and Nunito, which feel warmer and a lot easier to read at small sizes.

The result is something that feels less like a productivity app that borrowed some game mechanics, and more like an actual game. That distinction matters to us.

## New Free Themes

Two new themes are available to everyone, no subscription required: Foxy and Dino. We also moved Default, Ocean, and Galactic into the free tier, so if you've been stuck on the default look because the other themes were paywalled, now you have options.

The new default for fresh installs is Nightscape, a dark mode theme that replaced the old Kingdom theme. If you installed before this update, your theme preference is unchanged.

## A Podium on the Leaderboard

The top three players on the global leaderboard now get a proper podium display on the homepage. First, second, third. It's a small thing but it gives the leaderboard a bit more ceremony.

## Nine New Achievements

We added nine new achievements tied to specific site groups. If you spend a lot of time in certain corners of the internet, you may have already earned a few of them without knowing. Check your achievements list.

There are also new tab minimalist achievements for people who somehow manage to stay under five tabs. We admire you. We do not understand you, but we admire you.

## Chrome is Here

Cheevos is now live on the Chrome Web Store. If you have friends on Chrome who've been waiting, this is the update to send them.

## Under the Hood

This release includes a lot of fixes that aren't glamorous but matter: a bug where certain achievements (including the dino and internet vacay ones) would never trigger, a streak detection issue around midnight, improvements to the profile page layout, and better handling of blank pages after deployment.

We also added a newsfeed to the website so you can see what other players have been unlocking recently. It's still early, but it gives the site a bit more life.

The first version of Cheevos for Firefox launched on December 23, 2011. It was built with XUL, Firefox's now-defunct extension framework that gave developers near-total access to the browser internals.

You could do almost anything with XUL. Rewrite the entire UI. Hook into every browser event. Access internal APIs that weren't documented. It was powerful, chaotic, and completely unsustainable.

Thirteen years later, we rebuilt Cheevos from scratch using WebExtensions and Manifest V3. Same concept, completely different architecture. The new version is more limited, more secure, and (somehow) harder to build despite doing less.

Here's the technical story of how browser extensions evolved, what we lost along the way, and why we chose to rebuild anyway.

## The Early Days: IE Toolbars and Browser Helper Objects

Before Firefox extensions, there were Internet Explorer toolbars.

If you used the internet in the early 2000s, you remember these. The Google Toolbar. The Yahoo Toolbar. The Ask Jeeves Toolbar. Every piece of software you installed tried to bundle a toolbar that would permanently attach itself to the top of your browser window.

Technically these were called "Browser Helper Objects" (BHOs). They were COM objects written in C++ that could hook into IE's rendering engine and intercept basically everything: navigation events, form submissions, HTTP requests.

They were also a security nightmare. BHOs had full system access. Malware developers loved them. Most users had three or four toolbars stacked on top of each other, eating up screen real estate and slowing down their browser. The term "toolbar" became synonymous with bloatware.

Microsoft eventually cracked down on BHOs, but the damage was done. Browser extensions had a reputation problem before they even really got started.

## Firefox and the XUL Revolution

Firefox changed everything.

When Firefox 1.0 launched in 2004, it introduced a proper extension system built on XUL (XML User Interface Language) and XPCOM (Cross Platform Component Object Model). Developers could write extensions in JavaScript that integrated directly with the browser.

This was radical. You could:

- Completely redesign the browser UI (see: Tree Style Tabs)
- Add new protocols and URL handlers
- Hook into every browser event (page load, tab open, download start)
- Access Firefox's internal APIs (bookmarks, history, cookies, everything)
- Override built-in functionality (custom rendering engines, modified network stacks)

The add-on ecosystem exploded. Firebug (web development tools), AdBlock Plus (ad blocking), Greasemonkey (user scripts), Vimperator (keyboard navigation). Extensions that would be impossible to build in any modern browser.

### The Original Cheevos for Firefox

The first Cheevos for Firefox launched in this environment. Built by Jared Wein in late 2011, it used XUL and XPCOM to track browser achievements.

From the original announcement:

> "Cheevos for Firefox is an addon for Firefox that makes learning about different parts of the browser fun, as well as giving you the opportunity to brag to your friends about your pro-level web surfing."

It awarded achievements for discovering Firefox's hidden features, using advanced functionality, and hitting browsing milestones. You could view your progress at `about:cheevos`, a custom about: page that only extensions could create.

The achievements ranged from simple (open your first tab) to obscure (discover specific Easter eggs in the browser). Points were awarded based on difficulty. There was no cloud sync, no leaderboards, just local achievements and bragging rights.

It worked because XUL gave extensions unrestricted access. Want to track when a user discovers a hidden feature? Hook into the relevant XPCOM component. Want to create a custom UI? Overlay your XUL directly onto the browser chrome.

This level of access is unthinkable in 2026.

## Chrome and the Rise of WebExtensions

While Firefox extensions were getting more powerful, Chrome took a different approach.

Chrome's extension API (launched with Chrome 4 in 2010) was deliberately limited. No access to browser internals. No UI overlays. Just a set of well-defined APIs for specific tasks: tabs, bookmarks, storage, messaging.

The trade-off was security. Chrome extensions ran in sandboxed environments. They couldn't access arbitrary files or system resources. They had to declare their permissions upfront. If an extension wanted to read your browsing history, you'd see that in the permissions dialog.

Firefox developers initially dismissed this as too restrictive. XUL extensions could do so much more. Why would anyone want a limited API?

But Chrome was faster. And more secure. And the limited API meant extensions were less likely to break when the browser updated.

By 2015, Firefox had a problem. XUL extensions were powerful but fragile. Every Firefox update broke dozens of extensions because they relied on internal APIs that weren't meant to be public. Developers were burning out trying to keep their extensions compatible.

Mozilla made the hard call: deprecate XUL, adopt WebExtensions.

## The Death of XUL and the WebExtensions Migration

In 2017, Firefox 57 (Quantum) launched with a new rendering engine and a hard cutoff: XUL extensions would no longer work.

Extension developers had two choices: rewrite their extensions using WebExtensions, or let them die.

A lot of them died.

Tree Style Tabs was rewritten. Vimperator became Tridactyl (with reduced functionality). Firebug was abandoned (Firefox integrated most of its features into the built-in DevTools). Hundreds of niche extensions just disappeared because the developers didn't have time to rebuild.

The original Cheevos for Firefox was one of them. The XUL codebase stopped working. Rewriting it as a WebExtension would have required rebuilding everything from scratch, and at the time, there was no clear path to implementing the same features.

WebExtensions were more limited. No custom about: pages. No deep hooks into browser internals. No UI overlays. Just the APIs that Mozilla and Chrome had agreed to support.

But they were also more stable. Extensions that followed the WebExtensions standard would work across Firefox and Chrome with minimal changes. Developers could target both browsers with the same codebase.

It was the right decision technically. But it meant a generation of extensions became obsolete overnight.

## Manifest V3 and the Latest Migration

Just when developers had adjusted to WebExtensions, Chrome announced Manifest V3 in 2018.

Manifest V3 changed the rules again:

- **Background pages became service workers:** Extensions could no longer run persistent background processes. Everything had to be event-driven.
- **webRequest API was restricted:** The old API that let extensions intercept and modify network requests (used by ad blockers) was replaced with the more limited declarativeNetRequest API.
- **Remotely hosted code was banned:** Extensions had to bundle all their code. No loading scripts from external servers.

Mozilla initially resisted, but eventually adopted a modified version of Manifest V3 that kept some of the old APIs while following the new architecture.

For developers, this meant another rewrite. Extensions that relied on persistent background pages had to be refactored. Ad blockers had to figure out how to work within the new limits. Some extensions just gave up.

## Why We Rebuilt Cheevos in 2026

So why rebuild an extension that died in 2017, using an API that's more restrictive than the one we started with?

A few reasons:

**The idea still works.** Gamifying browser behavior is fun. The original Cheevos proved that. Just because the implementation is harder doesn't mean the concept is dead.

**WebExtensions can do enough.** We can't create custom about: pages or hook into internal Firefox APIs, but we can track tabs, monitor page visits, and sync data to the cloud. That's enough to build something interesting.

**Cloud leaderboards change the dynamic.** The original Cheevos was local-only. You earned achievements for yourself. Adding cloud sync and leaderboards turns it into a multiplayer game. That's new.

**Privacy-by-design is possible.** The restrictions in Manifest V3 (no persistent background pages, limited network access) actually help with privacy. We have to process everything locally because we can't just send data to a server and sort it out there. The constraints forced us to build a better architecture.

**We wanted to see if it could be done.** Browser extensions are harder to build in 2026 than they were in 2011. But that's not a reason not to try. It just means the extensions that do get built have to be more deliberate.

## What We Lost

It's worth acknowledging what we can't do with the modern WebExtensions API:

- **No custom about: pages.** The old Cheevos had `about:cheevos`. The new one uses a popup and a web dashboard.
- **No deep browser integration.** We can't track when you discover hidden Firefox features because we don't have access to internal APIs.
- **No UI customization.** We can't modify the browser chrome or add custom buttons in arbitrary places. We get a toolbar icon and a popup. That's it.
- **No persistent background process.** The background script has to wake up, process events, and go back to sleep. This adds complexity and makes some real-time features impossible.

The new Cheevos is a smaller, more focused version of what the original could have been. That's not a bad thing. It just means we had to be more creative about what we could accomplish within the constraints.

## What We Gained

The trade-off is stability and security.

The original Cheevos was at risk of breaking every time Firefox updated. The new version uses stable APIs that Mozilla has committed to supporting. It won't break unless we break it.

The old version had full access to your browser. The new version has to declare exactly what it can do, and you can see that in the permissions dialog. If we ever wanted to add a feature that required new permissions, you'd know.

The WebExtensions API is also cross-browser. The same codebase could theoretically work in Chrome or Edge with minimal changes. (Stay tuned for support in other browsers...)

And Manifest V3's restrictions pushed us toward a privacy-first architecture. We can't send raw data to a server because the API makes it inconvenient. We have to process everything locally. That's better for you and better for us.

## The Future of Browser Extensions

Browser extensions in 2026 are more limited than they were in 2011, but they're also more sustainable.

The wild west era of XUL extensions produced some incredible software, but it wasn't built to last. Extensions broke constantly. Security was an afterthought. The barrier to entry was high (who wants to learn XPCOM?).

Modern extensions are boring by comparison. They follow rules. They use well-defined APIs. They ask for permission before accessing your data.

But they also work. And they'll keep working. And if you understand the constraints, you can still build interesting things.

Cheevos exists because we think the gamification concept is worth preserving, even if we have to rebuild it from scratch using more restrictive tools. The browser wars gave us the Book of Mozilla. The XUL era gave us Firebug. The WebExtensions era gave us... well, we'll see what it gives us.

We're betting on playful browsers and weird little extensions that don't need a business model. The tools are different now, but the spirit is the same.

We've been busy building features nobody asked for and fixing things you definitely didn't notice were broken. Welcome to v1.0.6.

## What's New

**Two New Achievements: Tab Minimalist**

We added achievements for people who somehow manage to keep their browser under 5 tabs. (`tab_minimalist_1` and `tab_minimalist_2`, worth 10 XP each). We're not sure these players actually exist—if you unlock these, please contact us so we can study you.

**The Newsfeed**

Your homepage now has a live feed of recent achievements unlocked across the community. Watch in real-time as someone in Tokyo earns "Wiki Walker" or a player in Berlin completes "Konami Code." It's like a spectator sport, except the sport is browsing the internet.

The feed updates automatically, but if you're impatient (or just want to see if anyone's beaten you to a rare achievement), there's a manual refresh button. We added rate limiting so you can't spam it. Trust us, we know you would.

**Hall of Fame Podium**

The leaderboard now features a podium view for the top 3 players. Gold, silver, bronze—the whole Olympic experience, except the medals are for opening tabs and finding easter eggs.

**Profile Avatars**

If you sign in with Google, your profile picture now syncs automatically. No more placeholder silhouettes. Your face is now immortalized in the global rankings (assuming you're good enough to make the leaderboard).

## Bug Fixes & Improvements

- **Achievement Detection:** Fixed `inbox_zero_hero` (for email sites) and improved tracking for single-page apps (SPAs). Achievements like `the_voyager` and `persistence_professional` now work correctly on sites that navigate without full page reloads.
- **Chrome Support:** The extension is now live on the Chrome Web Store.
- **Privacy:** Domain hashes are now truncated to 10 characters instead of the full SHA-256. More privacy, same functionality.

Type `about:mozilla` into Firefox right now. Go ahead, I'll wait.

You get a page with cryptic religious text styled like an ancient manuscript, complete with citations from the fictional "Book of Mozilla." It's been there since the Netscape days. It serves no functional purpose. It doesn't help you browse faster or make Firefox more secure.

It's just there because someone thought it would be fun.

This used to be normal. Browser developers would hide jokes, games, and secret messages in their products. Not for marketing or user retention metrics. Just because they could.

Here's a chronicle of when browsers had personality, and what we lost when they became products instead of playgrounds.

## The Book of Mozilla

Let's start with the classic. The Book of Mozilla is a series of cryptic passages hidden in Netscape Navigator (and later Firefox) that chronicle the browser wars through biblical metaphor.

The first passage appeared in Netscape 1.1:

> "And the beast shall come forth surrounded by a roiling cloud of vengeance. The house of the unbelievers shall be razed and they shall be scorched to the earth. Their tags shall blink until the end of days."

This was 1995. Microsoft was gearing up to crush Netscape with Internet Explorer. The "beast" was a reference to the Netscape dinosaur mascot. The "house of the unbelievers" was Microsoft. The "tags that blink" was a jab at the widely-hated `<blink>` tag that Netscape had inflicted on the web.

Later versions got more elaborate. Firefox's about:mozilla pages are styled in deep red with ornate typography. Each passage marks a major event: Netscape's death, Mozilla's rise from the ashes, the release of Firefox.

The last official verse was added in 2020 and reads:

> "The Beast continued its studies with renewed Focus, building great Reference works and contemplating new Realities. The Beast brought forth its followers and acolytes to create a renewed smaller form of itself and, through Mischievous means, sent it out across the world."

GeckoView was a new lighter and faster library used for rendering web content on Android. Firefox Focus was the first to use it. A reference browser was introduced as a guide for developers using these new components. Firefox Reality was an open-source web browser developed by Mozilla specifically for standalone AR/VR headsets. It's dramatic, it's silly, and it's been sitting there in the codebase for over 20 years because someone decided it was worth keeping.

## Chrome's Dinosaur Game

If you've ever lost your internet connection while using Chrome, you've seen the dinosaur. Press spacebar and it turns into a side-scrolling endless runner. Jump over cacti. Don't hit the pterodactyls.

This isn't just a cute distraction. It's a remarkably well-designed easter egg that serves a real purpose: giving you something to do while you wait for your connection to come back.

The game was added in 2014 by a small team of Chrome developers — Sebastien Gabriel, Alan Bettes, and Edward Jung. Gabriel designed the character and gave it its name. The dinosaur is named "Lonely T-Rex" in the code. The cacti get faster the longer you survive. At night the color scheme inverts.

By 2018, it was being played over 270 million times per month — a stat the developers shared publicly. People set high score records. There are YouTube tutorials on advanced techniques. Some players have modded it to run at absurd speeds.

None of this was planned. It was just a developer thinking, "What if we made this error page less depressing?"

## Opera's Hidden Games

Opera used to be weird. Not in a bad way. In a "we're going to do whatever we want" way.

In the 2000s, Opera had an entire secret game hidden in the browser. Type `opera:game` into the address bar and you'd get a text-based adventure game set inside the Opera Software office. You'd wander around the building, talk to developers, and solve puzzles to escape.

There was also `opera:config`, which looked like a standard settings page but had dozens of experimental flags and developer tools hidden behind obscure names. Not quite an easter egg, but it had the same spirit: here's the whole engine, go play with it if you want.

Modern Opera (post-2016 rebuild) has lost most of this personality. It's cleaner, faster, and much more boring.

## Internet Explorer's Developer Signatures

Internet Explorer gets a bad reputation (deserved, mostly), but the IE team had their own tradition: signing their work.

In IE6, if you opened the "About Internet Explorer" dialog and held down Ctrl+Alt, the developer team's names would scroll by like movie credits. Not hidden exactly, but not advertised either. Just a quiet acknowledgment that real people built this thing.

IE's rendering engine (Trident) also had quirks mode, standards mode, and "almost standards mode" (which was unofficially called "we're trying our best mode" by developers who had to deal with it). The browser was a mess, but at least the team had a sense of humor about it.

## Firefox's Developer Easter Eggs

Firefox has always been the most playful of the major browsers. Beyond the Book of Mozilla, there's `about:robots`, which displays a message in retro computer typography:

> "We have come to visit you in peace and with goodwill!"

Clicking "Try Again" cycles through different button text and the page includes Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy references.

There's also `about:config`, the advanced settings panel that starts with a warning that you might "void your warranty" (Firefox doesn't have a warranty). Power users ignore the warning and tweak hundreds of hidden settings. It's technically not an easter egg, but it has the same energy: here's the stuff we usually hide, go break things if you want.

## The Hidden Unicorn Pong Game

And then there's the weirdest one: Firefox has a playable Pong game hidden in the toolbar customization screen.

Yes, really.

Right-click on the toolbar, select "Customize Toolbar," and then drag everything (except "Flexible Space") from the palette into the overflow menu. Keep dragging until the palette is basically empty. If you do this right, a small unicorn button appears at the bottom of the customization window.

Click it. You get Pong, except your paddle is the "Flexible Space" toolbar element and the ball is a tiny unicorn. Use arrow keys to move.

It's completely useless. It has nothing to do with browser functionality. The only way to find it is to basically introduce chaos into your browser's toolbar layout. And if you lose, you can click the unicorn button to play again.

This is the kind of thing that could never survive a modern product review. "Why are we shipping a Pong game in the toolbar customization screen?" "What's the user story?" "How does this align with our Q2 objectives?"

But someone at Mozilla built it anyway, and someone else approved the merge request, and now it's just sitting there waiting for people who are bored enough to completely reorganize their toolbar.

When you're done, you click "Restore Defaults" and pretend it never happened. Or leave the chaos so you can play again.

## What Happened?

Easter eggs have mostly disappeared from modern browsers. Chrome still has the dinosaur. Firefox keeps the about: pages. But new ones aren't being added at the same rate.

Why?

Part of it is professionalism. Browsers are serious business now. Chrome has 3 billion users. Firefox is fighting for survival. There's no room for whimsy when you're optimizing load times and patching zero-day vulnerabilities.

Part of it is legal risk. Easter eggs can introduce security vulnerabilities if they're not carefully reviewed. Hidden code paths mean more surface area for exploits. It's easier to just not do it.

Part of it is corporate culture. Google, Mozilla, Microsoft, and Apple all have processes now. Code reviews, security audits, accessibility requirements. Adding a joke to the codebase means getting it through the same gauntlet as critical features. Most developers don't bother.

But I think the biggest reason is that browsers stopped being passion projects and became products.

Netscape developers added the Book of Mozilla because they were furious at Microsoft and wanted to leave their mark. Chrome developers added the dinosaur because they thought it would be funny. Opera developers built a text adventure game because they had the time and nobody stopped them.

Modern browser development is faster, more secure, and far more polished. But it's also more corporate. Easter eggs don't have KPIs. They don't increase engagement metrics. They're just there for the sake of being there, which is a hard sell in a quarterly business review.

## Why We Care

Cheevos exists because we think browsers should still have personality.

Not every feature needs a business justification. Not every line of code needs to optimize for user retention. Sometimes you build something just because it's fun and you think other people might enjoy it too.

The internet used to feel like a place where people hid jokes for each other to find. Now it feels like a shopping mall where everything is A/B tested and monetized.

We're not saying we're going to save the internet with a browser extension that tracks achievements. But we are saying that the spirit behind Cheevos is the same spirit that gave us the Book of Mozilla, the Chrome dinosaur, and Opera's text adventure game.

The web is better when it's weird. Browsers are better when they have personality. And if we can't get browser developers to add more easter eggs, we'll just build an extension that turns your entire browsing experience into one.

            <title><![CDATA[How We Built Achievement Tracking That Doesn't Watch You Browse]]></title>

Most browser extensions ask for permission to "read and change all your data on all websites." Then they collect everything you do, send it to a server, and promise to keep it safe.

We took a different route.

Cheevos tracks achievements based on your browsing behavior, but your actual browsing history never leaves your computer. No raw domains, no URLs, no timestamps that could identify you. Just anonymized stats that sync to the cloud when you unlock something worth celebrating.

This wasn't the easy path. It would have been simpler to log everything and sort it out on the server. But we wanted to build something we'd actually use ourselves, and none of us want to be watched while we browse.

Here's how we pulled it off.

## The Core Challenge

Achievement tracking needs to know what you're doing. How many tabs did you open? How long were you on that Wikipedia page? Have you visited 100 unique domains this week?

These questions require data. The problem is that "data about your browsing" is also called "an invasive surveillance log" if you're not careful about how you handle it.

The traditional approach goes like this:

1. Extension monitors your browser activity
2. Extension sends events to a server ("User opened tab at example.com at 2:34 PM")
3. Server processes the data and decides when to award achievements
4. Server stores everything forever (just in case you need it later)

This works fine if you don't care about privacy. The server has complete visibility into your browsing patterns. It can see that you visit Reddit during work hours, spend 40 minutes reading Wikipedia articles about obscure sea creatures, and keep 15 tabs of Stack Overflow open at all times.

We didn't want that kind of access. We don't want to know what you browse. We just want to know that you unlocked an achievement.

## Local-First Architecture

The solution was to flip the whole model around. Instead of sending raw data to the server and processing it there, we do all the achievement logic locally in your browser.

Here's how it actually works:

1. **Local Tracking:** When you open a tab, switch windows, or stay on a page for a while, the extension's background script updates a local state object. This never leaves your computer.

2. **Achievement Detection:** The GameEngine (the core logic that handles achievements) runs entirely in the extension. It checks your local state against achievement criteria and decides when you've unlocked something.

3. **Sync Only Results:** When you unlock an achievement, we sync your anonymized stats to our server. Not the raw data. Just the aggregated counts: total XP, achievement IDs you've unlocked, your display name.

4. **No Reconstruction:** Because we never store the raw data, we can't reconstruct your browsing history even if we wanted to. It's not encrypted or anonymized. It just doesn't exist on our servers.

This is what "privacy by design" actually means. It's not a setting you can toggle or a policy we promise to follow. It's the fundamental architecture. We can't violate your privacy because we don't have the data to violate.

## Domain Hashing and K-Anonymity

Some achievements require tracking unique domains. For example, "visit 100 unique websites" needs to count distinct domains without double-counting.

The naive approach: store a list of every domain you visit. Bad idea for obvious reasons.

Our approach: hash the domains.

When you visit a website, we run the domain through SHA-256 (a cryptographic hash function) and truncate the result to the first 10 characters before storing it in local state. So "example.com" becomes something like "50d858e098".

This truncation adds a second layer of privacy: even if someone had a giant lookup table of billions of hashes, multiple different domains might share the same 10-character prefix. This intentional "loss of resolution" makes it mathematically impossible to be 100% certain which domain a hash came from, while still being precise enough to avoid double-counting for a single user.

The hash is one-way. You can't reverse it to get back the original domain. You can check if a domain matches a hash (by hashing and truncating it again), but you can't look at a hash and figure out what domain it came from with absolute certainty.

We store these hashes in a Set (a data structure that automatically handles uniqueness). When the Set reaches 100 items, you unlock the achievement. Simple. Private.

But there's a catch: rainbow tables.

If someone really wanted to figure out what domains you visited, they could hash every known domain on the internet and match them against your hashes. This is called a rainbow table attack, and it works because there's a finite number of popular websites.

To defend against this, we never sync the domain hashes to the server. They stay local. All we sync is the count: "This user has visited 100 unique domains." We can't see which ones.

This follows the principle of k-anonymity: we can know aggregate information (how many unique domains) without being able to identify specific records (which actual domains).

## What We Actually Store in Our Server

When you sign in and sync your progress, here's what we store in the cloud:

That's it. No domains. No URLs. No browsing patterns.

## The Trade-Offs

Local-first architecture isn't free. It comes with real costs:

**Limited Cross-Device Sync:** Because the detailed tracking state lives locally, you can't seamlessly switch between devices mid-session. Your achievements and XP sync, but the local state (like "you've been on this page for 30 minutes") doesn't transfer. If you close your browser and open it on another device, some progress toward time-based achievements resets.

**No Server-Side Analytics:** We can't generate interesting insights like "the average user visits 50 unique domains per week" because we don't have that data. Some extensions use anonymized aggregate data to improve their products. We can't. We're flying blind.

**Harder to Debug:** When users report bugs, we can't look at their server-side logs to figure out what went wrong. All we have is what they tell us and what we can reproduce locally.

**More Complex Code:** Running all the logic in the extension means the background script is doing a lot more work. This adds complexity and a potential for bugs.

These are real trade-offs. But we think they're worth it.

## Why This Matters

Privacy-by-design isn't a selling point. It's not a feature you can add later or a compliance checkbox to tick. It's a foundational decision that affects every part of the architecture.

Most companies don't do it because it's inconvenient. Centralized data makes everything easier: debugging, analytics, feature development, monetization. The cost is your privacy, which doesn't show up on their balance sheet.

We built Cheevos the way we'd want someone else to build it. Local-first. Hash-based tracking. Minimal data sync. No surveillance.

Is it perfect? No. But it's honest. We can't watch you browse because we designed the system so that it's technically impossible.

That's the point.

You have 67 tabs open right now. Maybe more. Three of them are playing audio, somewhere in there is a recipe you were going to make for dinner last Tuesday, and you can't remember why you kept that GitHub issue from 2019.

We know because we've been there too.

The internet is full of people telling you how to fix this. Close your tabs. Use a bookmark manager. Try the two-minute rule. Download another productivity app that will send you push notifications about your lack of discipline.

We tried a different approach: what if we just turned it into a game?

## The Problem with Productivity Culture

Productivity apps treat your browsing behavior like a problem to solve. They assume you're broken and need fixing. Tab management tools scold you with passive-aggressive notifications. Browser extensions promise to "boost your efficiency" and "maximize your workflow."

Here's the thing though: most of us aren't opening 50 tabs because we lack self-control. We're doing research. We're context-switching between projects. We're keeping things we might need later because our brains can't hold it all at once. The tabs aren't the problem. They're a symptom of how we actually use computers in 2026.

So instead of building another app to lecture you about tab hygiene, we built a leaderboard.

## How It Started

The original Cheevos for Firefox launched back in 2011. It was a simpler time. Browser extensions could do basically anything. The web felt more playful. Developers were hiding easter eggs in their products instead of A/B testing every pixel.

That extension tracked achievements for browsing behaviors: opening your first tab, installing an add-on, visiting a certain number of unique domains. Nothing revolutionary, but people loved it. It turned the everyday act of using your browser into something worth paying attention to.

Then Firefox rebuilt their extension API. Chrome pushed Manifest V3. The old codebase stopped working. We could have let it die, but the idea stuck around: what if we rebuilt it for the modern web, but this time with cloud leaderboards?

## Privacy First, Always

Here's where it gets technical. Building achievement tracking that respects privacy is harder than you'd think. The easy path would be to collect your browsing history and send it to a server. Track every URL, analyze your behavior, sell insights to advertisers.

We didn't do that.

Instead, all achievement logic runs locally in your browser. We use domain hashing (SHA-256) so that raw browsing data never touches our servers. When you unlock an achievement, we only sync the anonymized stats to our server. No tracking pixels. No third-party analytics. No data mining.

## Why Gamification Works Better

Gamification gets a bad reputation because most companies use it to manipulate behavior. Collect your daily bonus. Maintain your streak. Unlock premium features by inviting friends.

That's not what we're doing.

Cheevos doesn't try to change how you browse. It just makes visible the weird, wonderful, absurd things you already do. You opened 20 tabs in five minutes? Achievement unlocked. You've been on the same Wikipedia page for 40 minutes? There's a badge for that. You have 15 browser windows across three virtual desktops? Leaderboard material.

Instead of shame, you get points. Instead of productivity anxiety, you get to compete with strangers on the internet to see who can hoard the most tabs.

It's ridiculous. But it's also honest about what browsing actually looks like in 2026.

## What's Next

This blog isn't going to be a series of feature announcements or corporate updates. We're not launching a content marketing strategy. We're just developers who find the intersection of browsers, privacy, and internet culture genuinely interesting.
