Time Traveler

How to unlock Time Traveler in Cheevos, revisit a bookmark that's at least five years old. Worth 20 XP.

The story

Partner. That bookmark survived five years, and you went back to it.

Most saved pages get forgotten within weeks. The folder fills up, the scroll gets long, and the promise you made to yourself, I will come back to this, quietly stops being kept. Five years is a long time for a single link to sit there unopened and still be worth clicking.

But you clicked it. Something you decided mattered half a decade ago is still important enough today to go looking for. Cache finds this almost unbearably meaningful, because it means the bookmark did its one job: it waited, patiently, for exactly this moment.

He has bookmarks of his own from 1998, tucked away in folders he still opens sometimes. Some of the pages load fine, unchanged, like no time passed at all. Some of them are gone, replaced by parking pages or nothing at all, and he has to sit with that for a second before moving on. Both outcomes are interesting to him. Neither one makes him regret keeping the link.

Your five-year-old bookmark still worked, or it didn't, and either way you found out something real about how the internet ages. Cache is filing this one as proof that old links are worth checking, not just keeping.

The catalog entry

FIVE-YEAR-OLD BOOKMARK VISITED Acquired: Navigated to a bookmark created more than five years ago. Condition: Pre-rescue. Wayback-eligible. Rarity: RARE. Most old bookmarks are never opened. Cache's Notes: This bookmark survived five years without being deleted. You kept it. You went back to it. What was important enough to save five years ago is important enough to revisit now. Cache finds this deeply meaningful. He has bookmarks from 1998. He visits them. Some of the pages still load. Some do not. Both are interesting.

Spoiler: how to unlock it

This one needs a bookmark that has genuinely been sitting around, not a fresh save.

  1. Open your browser's bookmark manager.
  2. Find a bookmark with a creation date at least five years in the past.
  3. Click it to navigate to that page.

Most browsers, including Firefox and Chrome, store a creation timestamp alongside every bookmark, visible in the bookmark manager or library view. Cheevos checks that timestamp against the current date when you open a bookmark, and if five years or more have passed since you saved it, the achievement unlocks. If the page no longer loads, that is worth knowing too: it may still be recoverable through the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine.

Where it fits in the Stash

Cache treats old, still-visited bookmarks as proof that keeping things is worth it, filed right alongside the rest of his rescued archive. To meet the raccoon who checks his oldest links on purpose, read the story.
