The story

Partner. You refreshed. Then you refreshed again. Then once more.

Cache has seen this exact pattern more times than he can count. Something did not load. Or it loaded and the thing you wanted was not there yet. Or it loaded, the thing was there, and somehow you forgot and hit refresh anyway.

He does not think less of you for it. He thinks this is one of the most human things a browser can record. The page did not change. You checked again. The page still did not change. You checked a third time, because maybe, this time, it would.

The turn: Cache used to log this under errors. He has since moved it to BEHAVIOR ARTIFACTS, a much kinder shelf. It sits there next to every other small, forgivable, entirely normal thing people do while waiting on the internet to catch up with them.

Spoiler: how to unlock it

This one sneaks up on almost everyone within their first few days of browsing.

  1. Load any page.
  2. Press Ctrl+R (or Cmd+R on a Mac), or click the reload button, to refresh it.
  3. Do this two more times within 10 seconds of the first refresh, on the same page.

A page reload re-requests the document from the server, or pulls it from the browser's cache if nothing has changed, re-runs all its scripts, and resets its state from scratch. That is different from a hard refresh (Ctrl+Shift+R), which also bypasses the local cache and forces every asset to be re-downloaded fresh, which is the move to reach for when a page seems stuck showing outdated content.
