Scrolling Next Door

How to unlock Scrolling Next Door in Cheevos. Scroll 10,000 pixels total, about a city block. Worth 5 XP.

The story

Partner. Ten thousand pixels. A city block, roughly, of content.

This is one of the first distances Cache measures for a new partner, and one of the fastest to reach. A single long article, one busy news feed, one deep scroll through a thread, and you've covered it without noticing.

Cache likes this comparison, a city block, because it's a distance most people can picture. In the real world, a city block takes about a minute to walk. You covered the same rough distance scrolling, sitting down, one screen at a time.

The turn: Cache finds it interesting that distance applies here at all. Walking and scrolling are completely different mechanisms, one physical, one digital, and yet the same unit, the same idea of covering ground, works for both. He measures both the same way, because to him they're both just movement through something.

The catalog entry

TEN THOUSAND PIXELS SCROLLED Acquired: Scrolled a total of 10,000 pixels. Condition: In progress. This is just the beginning. Rarity: Common. Everyone hits this quickly. Cache's Notes: Ten thousand pixels is a city block, roughly. In the real world, a city block takes about a minute to walk. You scrolled a city block of content. Cache thinks about this comparison sometimes. He finds it interesting that distance applies to both physical movement and digital consumption. Different mechanisms. Same measurement.

Spoiler: how to unlock it

This is one of the easiest achievements to reach and usually happens within your first browsing session.

  1. Open any page with enough content to scroll through: an article, a search results page, a social feed.
  2. Scroll down using your mouse wheel, trackpad, or the scrollbar.
  3. Cheevos adds up your total scroll distance across the session. Reach 10,000 pixels and it unlocks.

A typical laptop screen is somewhere around 800 to 1,000 pixels tall, so 10,000 pixels works out to roughly ten to twelve full screens' worth of content, scrolled past. Browsers track scroll position continuously as the page's viewport moves relative to the full document height, which is the same underlying mechanism that powers scroll-triggered animations, "read more" reveals, and infinite-scroll loading on most modern websites.

Where it fits in the Stash

Scrolling Next Door is filed as the first marker on Cache's distance shelf, the shortest walk in a collection that eventually leads all the way to Doomscroller territory. For the story of the raccoon who measures every kind of movement, read the story.
