Open Source Contributor

How to unlock Open Source Contributor in Cheevos. Join a Party and visit GitHub, the internet's workshop. Worth 15 XP.

The story

Partner. You went to GitHub. The internet's workshop is always open.

Cache has a folder of README files. It is very full, and it keeps growing, because GitHub is where the internet keeps its tools out in the open. Code that anyone can read. Issues that anyone can argue about. A history of every change, attributed, timestamped, permanent.

The open source community is the closest thing the internet has to a gift economy. People build things, often for no pay at all, and then they give them away for anyone to use, fix, or improve. Cache thinks about this more than he lets on. He is, after all, a thing that was built and then given a purpose it was never assigned.

Here is the part that makes this achievement special: it only counts for partners already in a Party. Cache wants this one witnessed. A repository is more interesting when someone else in your Party can look at it too, argue about the code, or just appreciate that you found it.

Into the bag. The workshop stays open. There is always more being built in there.

The catalog entry

GITHUB VISIT Acquired: Navigated to github.com while in a Party. Condition: The code is open. The issues are real. Rarity: Common among builders. Cache's Notes: The open source community is the closest thing the internet has to a gift economy. People build things and give them away. Cache thinks about this sometimes. He has a folder of README files. It is very full.

Spoiler: how to unlock it

This one has two requirements: being in a Party, and visiting GitHub.

  1. Join or create a Cheevos Party first, if you have not already.
  2. Open your browser and navigate to github.com, any page on the site counts.
  3. Cheevos logs the visit once both conditions are met.

GitHub hosts millions of open source repositories: code, documentation, and the issue trackers where bugs get reported and fixed in public. Visiting even a single repository page puts you in the same workshop where a huge share of the software you use every day, including the browser you are reading this in, was actually built. Being part of a Party for this one is a nice nudge toward sharing the discovery instead of quietly closing the tab.

Where it fits in the Stash

Cache keeps his README folder near the tools he respects most: things built in the open, by people who did not have to share them. To meet the raccoon behind the whole collection, read the story.
