Cache keeps a folder labeled TODAY'S RECORD, and it is one of the busiest folders in the entire Stash. It holds whatever the aggregator sites decided mattered on a given day: the front page, the top comments, the arguments underneath the arguments. He updates it constantly because the sites themselves never stop updating.

He thinks of these places as the internet taking stock of itself in real time. Not a curated history, not somebody's careful archive, just a raw, ongoing vote on what people are paying attention to right now. It is messy. It is also, in Cache's opinion, one of the most honest documents the web produces.

He is aware these sites are built to keep you scrolling past the first few items. He does not lecture about it. He simply notes, the way he notes everything, that you were here, and that today's entry in TODAY'S RECORD now includes your visit.

  3. Let the page load.

Cheevos checks the hostname of the page you land on against this list of aggregator sites. Reddit is organized into thousands of topic-based communities called subreddits, each with its own voting-driven front page. Hacker News, run by the startup accelerator Y Combinator, ranks tech and startup links by community upvotes with famously terse comment threads. Lobsters is a smaller, invite-only alternative built around similar upvote mechanics for a more technical audience. All three surface content purely through community ranking rather than editorial selection, which is what makes them aggregators rather than publishers.
