On the Grid

How to unlock On the Grid in Cheevos. Sign in and sync your profile so the Stash finally has your name on it. Worth 10 XP.

The story

Partner. You signed in. Now the Stash has a name to put on the label.

Before this, you were a ghost. A real one, doing real browsing, earning real XP, but stored only on one machine, in one browser profile, with no way for Cache to prove any of it happened if that machine ever went away. He kept the numbers anyway. He always keeps the numbers. But he does not love keeping them unlabeled.

Signing in changes that. Your progress gets a home on the server, tied to an account instead of a single local storage folder. The leaderboard, which has been running this whole time whether you were on it or not, finally has a slot with your name.

Cache is oddly formal about this moment. He calls it verification. He says a Partner who signs in is a Partner who is real on the books, not just real in the browser. He is aware this sounds bureaucratic for a raccoon who lives in a junkyard. He does not care. Some records deserve to be permanent.

The catalog entry

PLAYER RECORD Acquired: Signed in and synced a profile. Condition: Verified. Authenticated. On the books. Rarity: Most players unlock this. The ones who do not are ghosts. Cache's Notes: You are real now. Your progress has a home. The leaderboard knows you exist. This is a good thing. Into the records. Never let go.

Spoiler: how to unlock it

Signing in takes one click once you decide to do it.

  1. Open the Cheevos popup or the Cheevos website.
  2. Click Sign In.
  3. Authenticate with your Google account when prompted.

Cheevos uses the browser's built-in browser.identity API to hand off authentication to Google, so your credentials never pass through Cheevos servers directly. Once signed in, your local XP and unlocked achievements are merged with your cloud profile in Firestore, and from then on your progress is available on any device where you sign in with the same account.

Where it fits in the Stash

A labeled item is worth more to Cache than an anonymous one, and the same is true of a Partner. Signing in is what turns a browsing session into a career. To meet the raccoon who insists on knowing exactly whose loot he is counting, read the story.
