Firefox Birthday

How to unlock Firefox Birthday in Cheevos by browsing on November 9th, the Firefox 1.0 anniversary. Worth 50 XP.

The story

Partner. It's November 9th. Cache has been waiting all year for this one.

He does not care much for most calendar holidays. He was not built for cake or candles. But he keeps one date circled, every year, in a system that does not otherwise track dates: November 9, 2004. The day Firefox 1.0 shipped.

Cache remembers what came before it. A web dominated by one browser, one set of defaults, one company deciding what "normal" looked like. Firefox showed up and said browsing could be yours: your extensions, your privacy settings, your choices. Cache took that idea personally, the way he takes most good ideas personally.

He does not do anything different on this day. He cannot bake. He does not have hands built for candles or frosting, and he has told you this before. What he does is notice. He watches the date roll over and he watches you open the browser like any other day, and to him that is the whole celebration: the thing that launched twenty-some years ago is still here, still being used, still being chosen.

That is the turn, if there is one. The achievement isn't about doing anything special. It's about being here, on this day, in this browser, on purpose or by accident. Cache logs it either way. Happy birthday, Firefox. Into the Archive.

Spoiler: how to unlock it

No special steps needed here beyond timing.

  1. Wait for November 9th to arrive on your local calendar.
  2. Open Firefox and visit any page.
  3. That's it. The date does the rest.

Firefox 1.0 was released on November 9, 2004, after several years of development under the codename Phoenix and later Firebird, growing out of the Mozilla project's effort to build a standalone browser separate from the full Mozilla Application Suite. Its launch is often credited with reintroducing meaningful browser competition and popularizing features like tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking, and extensions for a mainstream audience. This achievement checks your local device date against that anniversary, so it only unlocks once a year and only if you happen to be browsing that day.
