Early Adopter

How to unlock Early Adopter in Cheevos. Browse with Cheevos on a Nightly, Beta, or Canary build and log some cutting-edge loot. Worth 25 XP.

The story

Partner. You are running Cheevos somewhere most people have not even heard of. Cache noticed the build number.

Most browsing happens on stable, released software: the version that has been tested, patched, and handed to everyone. Nightly builds, Beta channels, and Canary releases are different. They are where the browser is still being decided. Features show up there before anyone knows if they will survive. Bugs exist that nobody has named yet, because nobody has found them yet.

You showed up anyway. Cache respects this in a very specific way. He keeps a section of the Stash for pre-release artifacts, things that existed briefly, in an unfinished state, before becoming something permanent or vanishing entirely. Software this early is fragile in the way old floppy disks are fragile. It might not exist in this exact form tomorrow.

Cache does not usually get to log things this fresh. He is used to preserving what already happened. This time he got to preserve something that is still happening. He notes your visit with what counts, for him, as genuine respect.

The catalog entry

PRE-RELEASE BROWSER DETECTED Acquired: Used Cheevos on a Nightly, Beta, or Canary browser build. Condition: Cutting edge. Handle with care. Rarity: RARE. Cache's Notes: The Nightly is where things are still being decided. Features show up. Features disappear. Bugs exist that have not been named yet. You are here anyway. Cache keeps a special section of the Stash for pre-release artifacts. Things that existed briefly before becoming permanent. This visit goes in that section. You are ahead of the curve. Cache notes this with respect.

Spoiler: how to unlock it

You need an actual pre-release browser build, not a stable release.

  1. Install a pre-release channel: Firefox Nightly or Beta, or Chrome Canary or Beta.
  2. Install Cheevos on that build, or open it if it is already installed.
  3. Browse normally, and the achievement unlocks once Cheevos detects the build.

Browsers expose their release channel and version string through the standard navigator.userAgent string, which is how Cheevos can tell a Nightly or Canary build apart from a stable release without needing any special permissions. These pre-release channels ship new engine features and experiments weeks or months before they reach the general public, which is exactly why they occasionally break in interesting ways.

Where it fits in the Stash

Cache's pre-release section sits apart from the rest of the junkyard, reserved for things that were caught mid-transformation instead of after the fact. To meet the raccoon who preserves software in the act of becoming itself, read the story.
