The story

Partner. You downloaded something. Cache heard the file land.

Most of what happens in a browser stays in the browser. A tab opens, you read something, you close it, and nothing physical changes on your machine. A download is different. It is the moment something crosses over, out of the tab and onto your actual hard drive, where it sits as a real file with a real size and a real place on disk.

Cache treats this as a small, significant act of commitment. You looked at something on the internet and decided it was worth more than a glance. Worth keeping. Worth the seconds it took to click and wait for the progress bar to finish.

This is the first one. There will be more, Cache is fairly confident of that, because there always are. But the first download is the one that proves the instinct is there. Once you have committed to keeping one file, the second one is just a formality.

  1. Find a file worth having: an image, a document, a program, anything.
  2. Click the download link or button.
  3. Let the download finish.

Your browser tracks every download in its downloads panel, opened with Ctrl+J in both Firefox and Chrome, which lists the file name, size, and source for anything you have saved. Cheevos watches for a completed download event through the browser's downloads extension API and counts it the moment the file finishes writing to disk.
