The story

Partner. You reached over and touched the volume of the internet itself.

Cache has a collection of autoplay video sounds from 2015 that he did not ask for and has never fully forgiven the internet for. Every tab that started blaring a video the second it loaded, uninvited, went straight into his archive. He kept them. He mutes them constantly. He has never once deleted them.

You did the same thing he does, in miniature. You reached for a tab and changed whether it made noise, muting something that was too loud, or unmuting something you actually wanted to hear. A small, ordinary act of control over a browser that otherwise makes a lot of noise on its own terms.

Cache considers this a service, both to yourself and, in a smaller way, to him. The audio still exists. It is simply, now, on your terms instead of the page's.

Spoiler: how to unlock it

This one takes one click, on any tab, in either direction.

  1. Find a tab that is currently playing or capable of playing audio.
  2. Right-click the tab, or click the small speaker icon that appears on the tab itself.
  3. Choose to mute the tab, or unmute it if it was already muted.

Both Firefox and Chrome expose a per-tab mute toggle directly on the tab strip, usually shown as a small speaker icon once a tab starts playing sound. Cheevos listens for the browser's tab update event and checks whether the tab's muted state changed, regardless of which direction you toggled it. Per-tab muting has been a standard browser feature for years precisely because autoplay audio is common enough that users needed a fast way to silence one specific tab without touching system volume.
